We are saddened by the passing of Jerry Koosman, one of the key figures of the 1969 World Series champion New York Mets.
Koosman and Hall of Famer Tom Seaver – who made their Major League debuts on back-to-back days in 1967 – formed the top-of-the-rotation tandem that helped turn the once-lowly Mets into world champs.
On October 16, 1969, in Game 5 of the World Series, Koosman threw a complete-game five-hitter against Baltimore for his second win of the series, this one clinching the world championship for the “Miracle Mets.” The image of Koosman leaping into catcher Jerry Grote’s arms after the final out remains one of the most iconic images in baseball history.
Koosman, who spent his first 12 seasons with the Mets, won 222 games over 19 years that included stops with the Twins, White Sox, and Phillies. He won a career-high 21 games in 1976, finishing second in NL Cy Young voting.
In 2019, the Mets retired Koosman’s uniform No. 36.
He was 83 years old.

Hofstra Senior utility man Gabriel Melara led the Pride in batting average in 2026, hitting .335 en route to All-CAA Second Team honors.
He will lead the way once again for a Hofstra lineup that is returning seven of nine starters from 2026. Here he is with an RBI single during intrasquad.
Junior LHP Brayden Gregg made 18 appearances for Hofstra in 2026, pitching to a 4.11 ERA and .236 BAA in 30.2 IP.
Gregg is a reliable arm out of the Hofstra bullpen, and is capable of starting when the Pride need him to. He will see plenty of work in 2027.
Hofstra Senior LHP Tanner Sanderoff made 19 appearances for the Pride in 2026, and is one of the team leaders in career appearances.
He will likely be one of the busiest Hofstra pitchers this season once again.
Hofstra freshman RHP Tristan Hickis was a star at Carey. He now joins a Hofstra team that has brought in a very solid freshman class.
Coach Catalanotto says Hickis has looked great in the Fall semester.
RHP Grady Valenti (Sayville 2027) commits to Manhattanville @BlueLineRangers
