Port Everglades Receives $30.75 Million in Federal Funding for Fuel Modernization. Well done @PortEverglades @browardinfo
(One-third of Florida’s transportation fuel requirements come from petroleum that is stored and distributed by companies located at Port Everglades, including petroleum to 12 counties and 5
International airports.
Petroleum accounts for approximately 20% of the Port’s total revenues, and the current volume
of petroleum products shipped through Port Everglades for the region is more than 5.5 billion
gallons per year.
Petroleum operators need to meet demand and enhance business efficiencies. The Slip 1
Expansion will allow them to keep up with growing consumption, to offload faster, and deploy
larger and more economical vessels.
Larger petroleum cargo ships such as the Aframax class began coming to Port Everglades several
years ago from Europe and South America, prior to the Panama Canal expansion. These ships
must be lightly loaded due to the inner channel’s restrictive 42-foot depth. Eventually, due to
economies of scale, fully loaded ships will be forced to go elsewhere, resulting in lost business
and jobs.)
