I think it’s because they came from very poor backgrounds & by dint of personality & hard work & extraordinary talent they won the lottery of life. Everyman. We feel it deeply .
i’m far from the first to comment on this, but i think the reason the deaths of Patrick Stewart, Dolly Parton, etc hit so hard is that we’re losing the last generation of people who became genuinely famous in a monoculture. studio execs have worked tirelessly to nix the “Hollywood star,” and social media has driven us all into silos. we’re losing the last few folks who bring us all together.
