Nalini Sharma hadn’t been feeling like herself for months. When she went to the doctor, she was asked if she’d ever had a mammogram. Because she lived a healthy lifestyle and had no family history of cancer, Nalini never thought she needed one. Nalini decided to get a mammogram, and a few weeks later, the results showed a lump in one of her breasts. In June 2020, Nalini was diagnosed with HER2-positive breast cancer. When she was given the diagnosis, she was shocked. "You absolutely need to look after yourself, but when you have kids, family and a busy life, you sometimes put yourself last," says Nalini. After a year of treatment, Nalini is now cancer-free and empowers women to take control of their health to prevent chronic diseases, including cancer. 💗 Getting a mammogram increases the chances of finding breast cancer early, and for most cancers, the earlier the cancer is found, the better chance there is of survival. “As a teacher, I feel really lucky to be in a position to educate kids about the importance of being safe in the sun. The problem is a sunburn, especially at a young age, just lays the groundwork for an increased risk of skin cancer in early adulthood.” Laura Crane, a teacher and a skin cancer survivor, knows the importance of a program like Sunsense, that provides free tools and resources to support the creation of sun safe environments that protect children from harmful UV. SunSense has information and resources for schools, daycares, and summer camps as well as information for parents. Learn more: bit.ly/4aW3gUU #SunSafety #HealthySchools

“Colon cancer screening can save your life, it’s as simple as that,” It’s #ColorectalCancerAwarenessMonth. Colorectal cancer is the 4th most commonly diagnosed cancer and the 2nd leading cause of cancer-related death among Canadians. In the spring of 2014, Jeff Orson had not been able to sleep for several months, knowing something was wrong, he headed to his doctor for a physical. Being in his 50s, Jeff’s doctor asked him to complete a FOBT (Fecal Occult Blood Test). After a positive test, Jeff was referred for a colonoscopy, which revealed troubling news. Jeff had stage 2 colon cancer. Jeff, now a Colorectal cancer survivor, is a cancer screening advocate and hopes to spread the word about the importance of screening through his musical performances. We are pleased to see the federal government taking a meaningful step towards addressing the harmful impacts of PFAS, chemical substances present in many consumer and industrial products used in daily life. These “forever chemicals” have many health harms, including causing cancer. Taking steps to minimize their use will protect Canadians and the environment, and create safer workplaces for firefighters and others.
The Government of Canada announced new steps to protect Canadians and ecosystems from polyfluoroalkyl substances (#PFAS), also known as “forever chemicals”. Find out more: ow.ly/KXi250VbhIl
