Each winter, floods damage homes, fields, and communities in northern Lebanon. Families with little to begin with are forced to start rebuilding their lives as soon as the floods recede. This year, with the rainy season weeks away, residents and CARE Lebanon are working together to prepare before the water comes. care.org/news-and-stories/no…

Repeated displacement, failed harvests, rising food prices, conflict and disease are making it increasingly difficult for people in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to feed their children, earn a living and rebuild their lives. The latest Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) analysis shows that 28.8 million people are currently facing acute food insecurity. Read more: care.org/media-and-press/new…

Child marriage is a human rights violation, and it’s still happening to one in five girls worldwide. It ends their schooling, narrows their choices, and puts their health and safety at risk. At CARE, we work with girls, boys, families, and community leaders to change the drivers of child marriage and open up new paths for girls.

#Haiti: "When we say people are facing crisis levels of hunger, we are talking about families who can’t reliably put enough food on the table, who are skipping meals, selling what little they own, or going into debt just to eat. As a result, the most vulnerable people such as children, as well as pregnant and lactating women, are growing weaker and sicker." - Dianna Darsney, CARE’s Global Humanitarian Director. care.org/media-and-press/new…

Somalia narrowly avoided famine during its most recent major drought, but many of the health centers, food assistance, and nutrition programs that helped prevent it have since closed. Now, forecasters warn that El Niño flooding in the coming months could push the country’s hardest-hit communities toward famine. care.org/news-and-stories/so…

The price of cooking gas has more than quadrupled in #Yemen. The September escalation of the war has pushed families into sites already strained by years of war. CARE’s assessments in Taiz governorate found that adults and children were already reducing meal portions and eating less frequently to preserve what little food they had. @AP @fatmakhaled46 apnews.com/article/yemen-sie…

Nigeria’s first Ebola case, confirmed on Tuesday, and the nine cases reported in Kenya over the past two weeks mark a significant escalation of an outbreak that has now spread beyond the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). As transmission crosses borders, so too do the risks, threatening not only lives but economic activity, access to essential services and the capacity for survival in communities already struggling to withstand multiple overlapping crises. care.org/media-and-press/ebo…

Families have started rationing water in and around Taiz city in Yemen as fuel and water systems serving 3 million people have been disrupted. “We feel the situation is really getting out of hand unless we able to negotiate access to have water tankers come in to the city,” said Iman Abdullahi, CARE Yemen country director. “When the war reached our village, we had to flee, leaving everything behind except the clothes we were wearing,” says Morada, a newly displaced mother in southwestern Yemen. Morada is one of more than 200,000 people who have fled their homes since the Yemen conflict escalated on Sept. 3. This is the worst outbreak of conflict since a U.N.-brokered truce in 2022. When Sefian gave birth to premature twins, both babies needed more specialized care than the rural health center could provide. They were referred to a hospital nearly 46 miles away, where they spent six weeks receiving care in a neonatal intensive unit. Eventually, Sefian was able to bring the newborns home. Two months later, both babies were diagnosed with severe acute malnutrition. “I did not expect my babies to survive." Read more: care.org/news-and-stories/ch…
