In the Vatican this afternoon, Pope Leo spoke to participants of an AI meeting. In his message, he stressed the importance of keeping the human person at the heart of this technology to avoid the danger of threatening the common good and reducing people to data points. vaticannews.va/en/pope/news/…

Speaking to participants of a meeting focused on the future of AI, Pope Leo XIV stressed that decisions relating to human life can never be given to machines. "Decisions affecting human life, freedom and the use of force must always remain subject to effective, informed and responsible human oversight. For this reason, artificial intelligence must be 'disarmed', and I encourage the States meeting in Geneva in November to take concrete steps toward banning lethal autonomous weapons."

The future of #ArtificialIntelligence is not pre-determined. As a technology developed by human beings, its future depends on the choices we make. We therefore have the responsibility to guide, change and, when necessary, reject its applications. A reliable system that serves the human person is of greater value than one that is exceptionally powerful but whose consequences cannot be adequately foreseen or controlled.

Machines are tools, not persons. Today, some propose granting these systems rights, or even legal personhood. Such an approach risks obscuring human responsibility and leaving those who suffer harm to confront a faceless entity.

We keep Archbishop Eamon Martin and bishops from across Europe in our prayers as they gather in Salzburg this week. Their gathering began with a time of prayer for peace in Ukraine, joined by Major Archbishop Sviatoslav Shevchuk of Kyiv-Galicia. May the Holy Spirit guide their conversations, inspire their discernment and strengthen their shared commitment to the mission of the Church and the pursuit of peace. Heart breaking news of train crash in Spain. May the Sacred Heart grant comfort and strength to the bereaved, healing for the injured, consolation to all those affected, including families and first responders. Please extend condolences to our Spanish neighbours and friends here in Ireland. Mary, Comforter of the Afflicted, pray for them.
