🎂 🚇 Happy 122nd birthday, New York City subway! The subway opened on October 27, 1904.
The 116 St station was one of the subway's original 28 stops on what was then the Interborough Rapid Transit line. Columbia graduate William Barclay Parsons (CC 1879, SEAS 1882) was the IRT's chief engineer.
122 years after the subway came to Columbia's Morningside campus, it remains a vital connection for Columbians and New York City. In 2025, more than 3.4 million subway trips started at the 116 St-Columbia University station.

Dr. Gerald Chan, co-founder of Morningside, will deliver our inaugural Engineering for Humanity Lecture on Nov. 18. bit.ly/4yMnQmn
Chan has made extraordinary contributions to biotechnology and health, starting many biotech companies across a wide range of disease areas.
In his lecture, “Science, Engineering and Innovation: Why Are You Studying Engineering?”, he’ll draw on the companies he has built to explore how an engineering education differs from a science education and where innovation fits.

One year after launching at Climate Week NYC 2025, Gotham Foundry convened for its first symposium on Sept. 23 on Columbia's Morningside campus. bit.ly/485bQkM
Researchers, entrepreneurs, city leaders, and community members gathered to discuss how New York City can accelerate regenerative materials, from lab innovation to market to workforce, across the fashion, construction, and health industries. bit.ly/485bQkM
Led by Director Helen Lu @ColumbiaBME, @Gotham_Foundry is a partnership that includes @Columbia, @NYCEDC, @genspacenyc, @asrc_gc, and @FIT, working with more than 20 community partners across the city.

Honored to be part of this team and proud of the work here. I've been thinking about batteries for ~25 years, and I've idealized electrolyte behavior for too long.
Researchers @CEEC_CU co-led a Nature study finding up to 40% of lithium ions in standard battery electrolytes cluster together, even without anions. The clusters may help form the film that protects battery lifespan & safety.

NOVAKnee, a “living knee” implant by Columbia Researchers, has been named to the 2026 TIME Best Inventions List.
The project is co-led by @ColumbiaBME Clark Hung and Nadeen Chahine, with @mumedicine collaborators led by James L. Cook.
