What is the best thing you can do for your portfolio?
It is not being right all the time... Quite the opposite

This balance 👇 is the ultimate thing
* Do sensible asset allocation
* Do not be at either end of the risk spectrum
* Have a reasonable global allocation
Good investing is NOT about looking for the multibaggers or optimising every step...it is about doing the boring stuff right!

Most investors don’t fail because they don't know anything about investing.
They fail because they go to extremes.
All “safe”… or all high risk.
Bulk of the money in fixed deposits provident fund, tax saving schemes etc OR thinking they can trade for a living.
But wealth isn’t built on extremes — it’s built on balance.
Not 100% safety.
Not 100% risk.
Just the right mix, consistently.
If you are looking to structure your portfolio better, we help investors build balanced, long-term strategies.

When should you sell a winning stock? 📈
Sounds simple, right?
But sell too early, and you could miss a multibagger.
Hold too long, and you could give back your gains.
So, where do you draw the line?
It’s not simply about whether the stock has doubled...or more
There are a few things I look at before deciding when to book profits.

Debt, currency and the power of signalling
History and what it teaches us about today
On the last day of 1989 the then new Finance Minister of India Madhu Dandvate made a statement, "The country's coffers are empty"
His aim was to show the previous government as profligate... But the impact was quite different
It showed India to be vulnerable and fragile, actually scared away foreign investors and resulted in the foreign currency and macroeconomic crisis that India faced a year later, causing us to mortgage the country's gold.
RBI's supposed recommendation yesterday to reduce or remove the liberalised remittance scheme (LRS) ostensibly to bring down foreign currency out flows and hence strengthen the Rupee is something similar.
This appear sensible if one looks at only the first order effects. But the signaling from such a move will be such so poor but it will have the opposite impact of INCREASING the downward pressure on the Rupee.
Before I go into explaining how this works, let me give the regulators a low hanging fruit which is something I have been recommending for quite a while. There is absolutely no reason why foreigners should be allowed to play in the Indian derivative market, especially as not only does it cause a drain of foreign exchange it is actually a drain straight out of the pockets of Indian individual investors in what is a zero sum game.
On understanding how it works, let us start with something that is easy to understand:
If a country wants to reduce gold imports it can easily increase import duties on gold.
That is a no-brainer...except that every time there is a higher gap between domestic and international prices, it becomes an incentive for smuggling gold.
Hence, something that appears okay and beneficial if one looks at the immediate impact can have a very different overall consequences when one looks at what is called the second order or higher order effects.
Because the world is about multiple rounds of actions and reactions.
In May (and thereafter), the Prime Minister made in appeal which appeared sensible at first glance asking Indians to
- work from home
- car pool
- use public transport
- reduce gold purchase
- cut down on foreign travel
At the first order level all of this is unexceptional and unobjectionable given that our situation has not be great on either the current account or FDI and FPI. Given the pressure on the Rupee it does make sense to reduce foreign currency usage.
The trouble begins because the world is not just about the first order impact of an action.
If the appeal was limited to cutting down on fuel usage it would have still been passed over as normal and transitory as many other countries also have been preaching frugality on fuel, given the continued supply bottle neck on crude and downstream products.
BUT because the appeal was not just about fuel but also other parts of foreign currency usage, there is a signalling part - a signal that shows that possibly the situation on the balance of payments/ currency front is worse than the market imagines.
It is the same thing about the current recommendations of the RBI.
So even as one tries to curb FX usage, the impact on the currency market might be the exact reverse of the desired one.
I saw this as a popular post on another platform along with a write up about how too much commercialisation, with emphasis on dressing up and gifts from husbands, meant that the real "love, devotion and tradition" associated with Karva chauth had been lost.
And I wondered since tradition, love and devotion were invoked, why not talk about what the so called Karva chauth tradition is really about - it is about patriarchy, plain and simple.
If it was really about love and devotion, one should have at least wondered why is it that there are no traditional fasts for men to prolong their wives' lives?
The reason is simple. The wife was/is considered a replaceable commodity (ask any gynecologist, especially in non metro cities, how the husband and in laws treat women even during delivery - most do not even want to donate blood to someone who is supposed to bring forth their next generation)
Whereas for the wife the loss of a husband was a catastrophic loss, effectively bringing to an end their own life as a full member of society
Till the Hindu Narriage act of the 1950s, which incidentally was opposed tooth and nail by every Hindu organisation, Hindu women did not have the right to divorce, to property and remarriage. The Hindu organisations were certain that giving women those rights would bring our great family culture to an end.
While I am against the whole thinking behind Karva chauth, at least now the women keeping the fast are demanding and getting some reciprocation, which is no bad thing IMO
Do you discuss stocks with friends or with your groups before investing? 👀
The question is does it help or hinder a good investment decision?
The surprising answer is both - it depends on HOW you do this.
In this video, I explain how this works - and no it is not about the number of opinions you collect.
So, is it better to trust the crowd or not?

The Diwali gift that is remembered...and that compounds!
Can you tell me who gave you what last Diwali?
I am sure you will draw a blank...or nearly so
What’s a Diwali gift people remember even 20 years later?
We spend time choosing sweets and accessories but do the recipients remember them even a few months later?
I’ve always believed in gifts that leave a lasting impression. 📚
This Diwali, what if you gifted someone a book instead?
'Money, Myths and Mantras' could be a great start to understanding money and investing.
If you want to bulk order it, send a DM right away to @firstglobalsec
And of course you can order some other books. Because those are the only gifts that are remembered decades later.

The sale was 2 years ago but for some reason it came up on my feed today.
Rs 20/20.7 crores becoming 32 crores looks good TILL you do the math. Add the cost of stamp duty and registration at the time of purchase and the 7 years that passed in between, and you are looking at a just over 5% compounding
Even if it was rented out, typically rental yields (annual rental income divided by the cost of the property) are low and don't leave much after property tax, maintenance etc
Plus there was a loan against this property. It is almost certain the 5% compounding would not have covered the interest cost
Also remember this is the best possible outcome as it includes land which not the case for most home transactions
The bottom line is that real estate as investment does not workout for most people. Buying a single home to live in has other considerations and is not a purely financial decision

A book about drug running, history, economics and of course business
What you didn't know you didn't know!
Don't miss it
And tell me what are you reading this weekend
Can a book about opium also be about business?
In 'Smoke and Ashes' by Amitav Ghosh uncovers the surprising links between opium, colonial power, global trade and fortunes across the world from the Indian subcontinent to Eastern United States.
It’s a side of business history we rarely talk about.

Sharing some good news - getting The Most Powerful Women award from Business Today - this time for 2026
Sharing with your tribe is actually the only fun of any achievement... And of course you need the blessings of your elders and your gurus.
And the best part is the joy from old teachers, old neighbours, family friends, parents and siblings of friends...people you may not have met for decades but who take such joy in your achievements
Truly blessed to have many such in my life 🙏🙏🙏
Also in a broader sense while at IIM and in the earlier years of my career I thought all achievements were gender agnostic and I never underlined the woman part, now I do because I realise girls and young women do not have enough role models... And so many young women come up and say that "You are an inspiration that it can be done"... So now I take that role a bit seriously especially as women's causes have been close to my heart since age 10
Wearing a saree with a craft from my hometown and bangles gifted by a school friend to represent my roots and my friends and family... Because they are all a part of where I reached
One of the highlights of the evening for me was this conversation with the captain and vice captain of the gold medal winning women's hockey team (which happened after some four plus decades)... And happened after a set back where they did not even qualify for the Olympics
Navneet Kaur, the vice captain said that she regularly stands in front of the mirror and tells herself in Punjabi: "Navneet Kaur, there is no one better than you. You are the best."
There was also the captain of the gold medal winning kabaddi team
I thought there was the best panel of the evening
As an aside all three of them said their favourite movie was Chak De 😄
Even the captain of the hockey team comes from a village where even till date there is no mobile signal.
She used to go for her hockey practice sitting behind her father on a bicycle
But she said she had this vision that she would excel in hockey
All of them manifested the visions that the first had in their heads... Which is a lesson for all of us as most of us face neither their starting challenges nor the going head to head with the best in the world.
Kudos to our champion sports people 👏👏👏
