What a day in Philadelphia!
Yesterday, Food Tank joined FareRx, AmeriHealth Caritas, and Temple University's College of Public Health at WHYY Studios for our first annual Food First Health Summit! Standing room only 400+ people!
We brought together members of Congress, health care leaders, researchers, community advocates, and food system innovators for an afternoon of conversations about food as medicine and what it will take to make healthy food accessible to everyone.
From discussions about nutrition and chronic disease to the launch of the Philadelphia Food as Medicine Coalition, there was so much to celebrate. And we even had some incredible live jazz!
A huge thank you to our speakers, partners, the WHYY team, and everyone who joined us in person and online.
We love you, Philly! ❤️

“Even if you don’t care about people, let’s say you care about the economy…Every dollar of SNAP turns into $1.50 in our communities. We have grocery stores that will likely go under as a result of SNAP changes.” -Loree D. Jones Brown, CEO, Philabundance

“It’s not enough to just tell someone to eat healthy. Not when food is not available and it’s not affordable. And we shouldn’t live in a city where it’s cheaper to buy a Twinkie than a banana.” -Jennifer Ibrahim, Dean of the College of Public Health, @TempleUniv

“Food Is Medicine cannot become something available only to people with good insurance, a nearby grocery store, enough money, enough time, or the right ZIP code. It has to be accessible. And it has to be affordable.” @DaniNierenberg

Few people have fought harder for America's farmers than John Boyd, Jr.
A fourth-generation farmer and Founder and President of the National Black Farmers Association, John has spent decades advocating for farmers and rural communities across the country.
This week, he joins Danielle Nierenberg on Food Tank's Food Talk for a fascinating and timely conversation about the future of American agriculture.\
John shares why he believes farmers are facing challenges even greater than those of the 1980s farm crisis, how trade policies and supply chain disruptions are affecting family farms, and why the upcoming midterm elections matter so much.
We need to hear more from the farmers who know these challenges firsthand.
Please take a listen and share this important conversation:

“Better food begins with embracing diversity. Whether that's diversity in our fields. Diversity in our ingredients. Diversity in the people preparing our food. Or diversity in the people we welcome around our tables. That diversity doesn't limit creativity. It expands it. It makes food more delicious. It makes hospitality more meaningful. And ultimately, it builds stronger communities.” -Danielle Nierenberg, Food Tank
