Last week, GOAL colleagues joined the @NetHope_org Global Summit in Amsterdam. At the Summit, GOAL Data Protection and Data Manager Delara Sheridan spoke about the challenges and practical solutions for strengthening data protection across diverse humanitarian contexts. As Delara reflected, it was an impactful opportunity to discuss both the challenges and solutions for effective data protection in the humanitarian sector. Acting before a crisis can make all the difference. The THRIVE Consortium — GOAL, @CAFOD, Mercy Corps (Prosper Global @ProsperGlb_org) and VSF Suisse — has welcomed an additional £750,000 from @FCDOGovUK to strengthen anticipatory action and climate resilience across 8 counties in #SouthSudan. The funding will enhance rainfall and river-level monitoring and expand automated weather stations, improving access to timely information so families in flood-prone areas have more time to protect homes, food supplies, livestock and other essential assets. All of us at GOAL are heartbroken to hear of the passing of Ciara Mageean. Ciara was an extraordinary woman whose strength, courage and determination inspired so many, both on and off the track. She was also a wonderful friend and supporter of GOAL, and we will always be grateful for her kindness, generosity and the support she gave to our humanitarian work. We will remember Ciara not only for her remarkable achievements, but for her warmth, spirit and the difference she made to so many lives. Our hearts go out especially to her husband Tommy, her family, friends and everyone who knew and loved her. Thank you for everything, Ciara. It was a privilege to have you as part of the GOAL family. This week, GOAL colleagues from #Honduras are in #Ethiopia as part of an @Irish_Aid-supported learning exchange on early warning and anticipatory action. The group travelled to Yabello to meet pastoralist communities, where livestock are central to livelihoods, identity and security. Garreh shared his experience of a devastating drought just a few years ago, when an estimated one million livestock were lost. In #Borena, traditional climate observers use indigenous knowledge, environmental changes and animal behaviour to anticipate weather patterns. Their role is not to replace scientific forecasting, but to complement it. As trusted voices within their communities, they can help bridge the gap between national forecasts and local action. This week, GOAL colleagues from #Honduras are in #Ethiopia as part of an Irish Aid-supported learning exchange on early warning and anticipatory action. Bringing together the Ethiopian Meteorological Institute’s forecasting expertise, GOAL Ethiopia’s experience working with communities and GOAL Honduras’ expertise in community-based early warning systems, the exchange is exploring how each link in the early warning chain can be strengthened. Traditional knowledge does not replace scientific forecasting. Alongside it, trusted community knowledge and local networks can help ensure climate information is understood, shared and acted on in time. As winter approaches, families in rural Idlib, Syria, face growing pressure to meet their essential needs. With support from the @eu_echo, GOAL team in Syria has provided cash assistance to 1,018 families in Kafr Nabl sub-district during the first round of distribution under the BRIDGE programme. This assistance lets families decide how to use it based on their needs and priorities, giving them the flexibility to choose what their household needs most. Cash is freedom. The freedom to choose. Paying for healthcare should not leave a family struggling to afford food or rent. Yet, GOAL and @sgdd_asam needs assessments in Türkiye found some refugee families are borrowing for treatment or cutting spending on essentials. With funding from @echo_Europe, the UCART+ project will provide urgent cash assistance to 553 households, reaching 2,765 people in Kayseri, Mersin and Şanlıurfa.
