According to a new report, EA’s decision to shut down BioWare was driven by economics, as it had to choose between funding a new Mass Effect and backing the safer bet, Star Wars: Battlefront 3.
To add insult to injury, Battlefront 3 isn’t even in development yet, and it hasn’t been officially announced.
Kane Parsons met with Valve to discuss potential routes for a Portal movie but exercised caution about making something that's compelling and fitting.
"I don't have a desire to sensationalize anything... What do [Valve] want to do? What do I want to do? Is there anything on the table in any way, shape, or form? ... it's more like having an abstract creative conversation that could flow in like 30 different directions."
In a recent Bloomberg report, Jason Schreier states:
“Star Wars: Battlefront 3 has not even begun development yet, but EA executives saw it as a less risky, more predictable bet than a new Mass Effect–and the publisher behind Battlefield has always been more comfortable with shooters than RPGs.”
With the added pressure of paying off $18 billion in leveraged debt after its sale to a business consortium and Saudi Arabia’s investment fund, Battlefront 3 made more financial sense.
Update: Activision issued a former apology and is removing the footage in a November 12 update.
