«Aquel día, la humanidad recibió un triste recordatorio: el de que vivíamos con miedo a los titanes, y hundidos en la deshonra de vivir dentro de estas jaulas a las que llamamos muros».
Every year it is inevitable that you miss something in Marfa but this one weighs heavy. I fear I missed an opportunity to experience something life changing.
Though I wasn't able to see it myself, I've talked about this performance and Allison constantly. I hope I find my way to see it at some point.
Grief gets a funeral and a wake, and not much else. @all_is_on_fire and @truedrew built something for everything after.
Ok, last thoughts on Marfa (probably not)
We all leave with a fire. Inspired, reminded of why we stick around this niche community. We travel home replaying each experience just to remind ourselves of another experience we almost forgot.
We write about it on the timeline. Thank each other for the memories and push each other to go further. Marfa is a playground, a sandbox, a laboratory for creatives and artists to show what they are capable of. And every year, it has gotten better. The intention, the depth of each exhibit, the level of raw talent. There were less people there this year but the product was notably better.
The fire rages hotter than ever. I'm more inspired to dissolve my self-inflicted boundaries than ever. I (like many that recently left Marfa) have grand ideas of what we want to bring in 2027.
But I've been here before. 4 times to be exact. And each time, I let that fire go out. A year is a long time and in our world, a year is like seven (we operate in dog years I guess). As we return to our families, our homes, our routines, it is natural for the high to wear off.
This is my fear. That the flame will go out. I understand I can't keep it raging. As the flavor of my turkey sandwich from Bordo fades in memory, so do the memories of the artwork and artists and experiences. Not gone, but faded.
The fire is not gone, but naturally fades.
So my commitment is to not let the fire go out. It will subside, of course. But it can't go out. Feeding a fire is far easier than starting a fire. So this is my goal. To maintain this fire, this energy over the course of the year. To say it out loud. To commit to myself and my peers to do something that will stay on the minds of my friends as they travel back from the Texas desert in 2027.
And I'm bringing friends along. Amazing creatives with grand ideas for 2027. If you get a random text from me asking how things are progressing, this is me helping to keep the fire burning for all of us...
If you have something planned for 2027 and you want a random checkin from me... just dm me. I'll add you to the list.
