Chevron, Exxon and Shell made over $36 billion in profit this quarter. As I told @NPR, the worst of times for most of us are the best of times for the oil companies. That’s why we need a permanent windfall tax. 🔗 Read more at the link below.

Oligarchs in California spent $379 million against Prop 40, a 5% billionaire wealth tax, outraising supporters 250-1. They’d rather poor kids die than pay a little more in taxes. Obscene. California, send these oligarchs a message: Democracy is not for sale. Vote for Prop 40.

Zucman is right. Really disappointed in Tyler Cowen because of this. He normally has (much) higher epistemic standards. See also: nitter.cf/jasonfurman/status/211…
Replying to @gabriel_zucman
The AI-generated “audit” of our scientific output, published by Tyler Cowen, has no merit. It is a grotesque use of artificial intelligence and a travesty. Anyone who has used AI knows that if you prompt an AI to find “errors” in a paper, it will oblige. Without an expert review of the output, this exercise is meaningless. You are insulting the intelligence of your readers. nitter.cf/MargRev/status/2115518…

But not everything is for sale in a democracy. This should be a wake-up call for democratic forces all over the world. It is not for billionaires to decide if billionaires should pay tax. It should never be for oligarchs to decide what is true or not. Emmanuel and Gabriel

Silicon Valley billionaires have already spent more than $300 million to defeat Proposition 40, saturating the screens of Californian voters with specious arguments and lies. They have employed numerous tactics: qualifying two poison-pill bills for the ballot (Prop 41 and 42) that would invalidate the billionaire tax; falsely claiming the tax on billionaires would hit everyone; hiding behind proxies, etc. This clumsy attempt at character assassination, 6 days before the vote on November 3, is one more tactic.

Nobody should ignore the context in which this is taking place. There is a strong anti-science current in the United States, coming from the White House and its tech billionaire allies who view universities as an impediment to their rule and greed. And of course, Californians are currently voting to create a wealth tax on billionaires, Proposition 40, which you hate because you understand that it could kickstart the movement to tax billionaires in the US and globally.

Your predecessors tried to discredit researchers who established that smoking caused cancer and uncovered human-made climate change. They had success for some time, they slowed down public action and killed a lot of people in the process, but ultimately failed. You will fail too.

Billionaires pay very little tax relative to their ability to pay – your patron Peter Thiel, Mr @tylercowen , is well positioned to know that. nitter.cf/gabriel_zucman/status/…
ICE is hunting down immigrants with the help of Palantir. In six months, Palantir’s founder, @PeterThiel, will be able to start spending unimaginable sums of money —completely tax-free — to bankroll the political causes dear to his heart. He'll be able to do it thanks to a tax-avoidance scheme he’s been building for more than 20 years, at a staggering cost to the American taxpayer. Let me explain. 🧵

While research papers can always be questioned and improved, the core findings of our work are beyond doubt, and no AI slop or propaganda will change that. Extreme wealth has exploded in the United States — you, Mr @elonmusk, are well positioned to know that.

You have decided to write a new chapter in the long history of merchants of doubt. AI opens up new possibilities to try to discredit research and academics, and you’ve decided to exploit them. You are continuing a long tradition, with the new weapons now at your disposal. But you have one big problem.

This AI hit job adds nothing to this collective work. It treats methodological choices we discuss at length in our own work as “major flaws”. It highlights assumptions discussed in the literature and labels them “errors”. It elevates trivial points as somehow crucial. And it peppers all of this with a torrent of meaningless slop. There is no intelligence in this, only malice. All the experts who have commented on your hit job have found it to be worthless.

Our work has long been thoroughly scrutinized by the global community of researchers. Our code and data are public. Comments, extensions, and refinements have been discussed in numerous conferences and journals for many years. This is how science operates.
