Halloween Nuggets:
1.) Boredom can be the brain’s creative waiting room. When you stop filling every empty moment with content, obligations, and stimulation, unexpected connections begin forming. Problems reorganize themselves. Ideas emerge. Perspective returns. Some of your most valuable thinking may happen while doing something spectacularly unremarkable. Let your mind wander occasionally. It might bring back a very interesting stick.
2.) Counterintuitive take: AI will eventually lead to another mass influx of new VO talent. Either the bubble will burst and techbros and those who get wiped out in the markets will need something to do, or it won’t, and thousands of displaced professionals will be looking for a new gig. Right now there are fewer new entries than there have been in years. A good time to plant flags and grow seeds.

1.) Some abilities deserve to remain joyfully unmonetized. You can be a wonderful cook without launching a meal-preparation company. You can paint without selling prints. You can write bad poetry about a goose and never once create a conversion funnel for goose-related intellectual property. Not everything valuable needs a revenue model.
2.) Trust your agents. If they send you something where the rate/usage/exclusivity looks a little dubious, feel free to ask what's up, but also remember that your agents often have info you don't, or that they can't share---like there's a whole campaign or voice-of opportunity behind that spot, or lots and lots of versions that pay individually. It's okay to ask, but if you don't trust your rep you should probably find new ones.

When Eric Bauza walked through the doors of the Hyatt Regency DFW to be the keynote for One Voice USA 2024, the first thing he did wasn’t to ask if his room was ready, or for help with his luggage, or to make some special request as the conference’s VIP guest.
Eric stopped just beyond the hotel doors after I greeted him, let me introduce him to Tom, and then spent five minutes interacting with my 8 year old as Bugs Bunny.
And that five minutes was all I needed to know about the man. He was that same guy the whole weekend, going out of his way over and over to make sure every single one of his fans was appreciated and given face time, and inspiring our attendees.
I didn’t know Eric as well as some of you, but I knew enough to see his soul. Our industry has lost a treasure.
May he rest in peace. 💔
