For 10 yrs, OR has invested significantly (not surpassingly) in schools. In the past 8 yrs, math/reading have tanked+enrollment has fallen off a cliff (pandemic+birth rate). Is the answer more $? Maybe. But some say OR needs to fix HOW that $ is spent. buff.ly/4hsSlFP

Ok, well, I was wrong in a previous story where I listed Vice Chair Rashelle Chase-Miller as potentially on the fence. She's making an impassioned plea for change, saying Black+Hispanic+Multi-Lingual+special ed kids in Portland cannot wait any longer for better-resourced schools.

Interesting aside from Armstrong here, saying that it is likely that whatever her final recommendation in November is, it will probably be tweaked from the current scenarios, as she incorporates feedback and recalculations.

At tonight's board mtg, a parade of folks lining up to testify about why @PPSConnect should not close their kids' schools. Fans of n'hood schools, small schools, focus option schools all having their say. One mom w/ a very point blank question: What will the community gain?

Dir. La Forte says she'll be a no vote, citing the timing of the ask, given budget concerns and consolidations. She says she's comfortable with the current contract. Engelsman sounds like she agrees. So we're looking at a 5-2 vote tonight, my best guess.

Engelsman points out that PAT took a one-year contract extension w/ 1 percent COLA. (Though there are other considerations there, including lining up bargaining schedules w/ other big district teacher unions around the state.)
