At this time of year, we come together to honour the courage and bravery of the Armed Forces and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. I want to give my thanks to those who have served and are still serving today. I know you and your families make huge sacrifices to keep our country safe. My job is to make sure that sacrifice is honoured, both through the way we treat our Armed Forces and our veterans, but also through the country we build for you and for your loved ones. We will give our Armed Forces the funding and equipment you need to keep this country safe, as well as the good housing, training, and support you deserve. This is a world where once again it’s become necessary to stand up for our values and stand alongside our allies. Our memories of those who went before us give us strength to know we will never be cowed in the face of threats or aggression. And together we will build a country we are proud to serve, and a future that remembers and honours those who fought for our freedoms. A Britain worth fighting for.

We remember those who gave their lives for our country. Veterans, service personnel and their families deserve our support. We are backing them with action: this government is protecting veterans' and forces' rail discounts in law. thesun.co.uk/news/40956165/v…

Today we remember the fallen and honour all those who have served our country. We also pay tribute to today's Armed Forces, our veterans, and their families. They are genuinely the best of us. At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will remember them.

‘Control’ by my friend and colleague @claire_ainsley is a terrific read. Clear diagnosis of the problem and ambitions solutions for our politics, our communities and ourselves. Highly recommend!

Some conversations never leave you. I for one will never forget being asked by a former member of the Coldstream Guards, in May 2017 on an early-morning walkabout of the city centre during my time as Mayor of Greater Manchester, whether I could justify him being left with no option but to bed down on cardboard and a sleeping bag on the steps of the Royal Exchange Theatre. I said no, I couldn't. But I walked away knowing he was not the only one. People who had been prepared to put their lives on the line for us now sheltering in theatre and shop doorways. I remember feeling chastened. How had my generation of politicians allowed this situation to develop without doing enough to prevent it? Most people leaving the Armed Forces go on to thrive in Civvy Street. They bring skills, discipline and experience that any employer should value. But some struggle with life after service, often through no fault of their own. Conditions caused by their time in the forces, such as PTSD, or the lack of support with the transition from one life to another, can be a root cause of homelessness. Too many are still left to face that struggle alone. When someone who has worn our nation's uniform ends up surviving on the streets, we owe them more than warm words on Remembrance Weekend. At the very least, we owe them a bed every night and support to recover. Everyone should know what help is available and where to find it. If you are a veteran facing homelessness, or know one who is, contact Op FORTITUDE, the UK-wide helpline, on 0800 952 0774 for immediate support. This is one of many government-backed veteran programmes, but I know we must do more. This Remembrance Sunday, as we honour those who have served and sacrificed for us, I want to set a new operating principle for the British state. It is simply this: no one who has served our country should be left to sleep on its streets. As part of my drive to end rough sleeping, I will be writing to councils in England this week to ask them to draw up a specific plan on veteran homelessness. As a start, I will ask them to ensure that any veteran sleeping rough is offered appropriate accommodation before Christmas. For the first time, the money is there to do it. We have provided councils with almost £900 million until the end of this Parliament to help end rough sleeping, including among veterans. We are also allocating nearly £9 million to local veterans' centres across the UK for targeted housing, employment and health support. Nearly all our councils have signed the Armed Forces Covenant. They care about our veterans and are already doing vital work with local charities to support them. Now we must go further and help councils turn that commitment into a roof over every head every night. Our veterans stood by us. We must stand by them. That means a commitment to a supported path away from the streets for everyone who needs one. From this Remembrance Sunday onwards, I want the whole country to honour that simple pledge.

Our buses and trains should work together – and work for us. @PaulJSweeney is calling for an integrated public transport network in Scotland, designed for the common good. It’s time to end the fragmented free-for-all and put passengers first. 🚌🚆

A busy few days at @UKMissionGeneva focused on keeping children learning, protecting women & girls, unlocking growth through trade and so much more. The multilateral system is under pressure, but there’s a commitment to making it more effective across the board.

What a lovely post and reflects what I know of Michael. It’s also a glimpse behind the scenes of the work that is done day in, day out to support constituents - casework like this is the bread and butter of elected representatives.
When broadband contractors faulty work ripped the soffits of my roof a few weeks back @michaeljmarra was on the case immediately on a Sunday night, with his office contacting them. A hard working and approachable MSP doing the job properly. If we had more like him in every party there would be much more faith in Holyrood.

I absolutely support Josh MacAlister’s plans to prevent young people from becoming homeless when they leave care. I was one of those statistics many years ago. But the heartbreaking reality is that decades later, we're still facing the same problems. Today, I'm supporting an 20-year-old care leaver who is at risk of homelessness because his local authority won't continue funding his independent living accommodation. Instead, they want to move him into shared housing, potentially destroying the stability he's worked so hard to build. The consequences? His mental health could deteriorate, his education could suffer, and he could end up homeless. We have to stop treating homelessness as simply a housing issue. It's about stability, mental health, education and the decisions being made about young people's futures. We cannot keep pushing young people leaving care backwards just as they're beginning to move forwards. Prevention doesn't start when someone becomes homeless. It starts long before, with the decisions we make about their lives.
