The digital commitments at the Canada-EU summit got little attention, yet they raise many of the same sovereignty questions that dominated the Canada-US relationship all year. Mikolaj Barczentewicz (@MBarczentewicz) joins the Law Bytes podcast to discuss. michaelgeist.ca/2026/11/the-…

Australia’s antisemitism envoy’s new plan does what few Canadian officials will: it names “modern, progressive antisemitism” as the most pervasive form in Australia today and puts responsibility on the institutions that legitimize it. 🧵 aseca.gov.au/sites/default/f…

The findings of the Government of Canada’s Campus Antisemitism and Student Experiences (CASE) report make clear that hate and antisemitism on university campuses demand urgent action. Today’s announcement by @UnivCan of its five-point action plan is an important step toward ensuring our campuses are places where all Canadians - regardless of background - can learn, teach, work and conduct cutting-edge research without facing harassment, discrimination, or violence. We commend CEO @GabrielbMiller and university presidents for demonstrating leadership and committing to action. We are particularly encouraged by the plan’s emphasis on enforcement and institutional accountability. University leaders cannot resolve conflicts in the Middle East. But they can uphold their own institutional policies, enforce standards of conduct and ensure campuses remain places where everyone is treated with dignity and respect. We also recognize Heritage Minister @MarcMillerVM's participation in this week’s discussion with university presidents and supporting a coordinated approach between governments and post-secondary institutions. The forthcoming release by @CdnHeritage of the second part of the CASE report will provide a further opportunity to advance this important work. CIJA and Jewish Federations across the country stand ready to work with governments and university leaders to ensure these commitments translate into concrete, meaningful action. Canada was ahead on this. Deborah Lyons published an IHRA handbook in October 2024, 18 months before Australia’s equivalent. Her office commissioned the Brym study on Ontario schools and the CASE campus study.

Then the government abolished the office. Its replacement is an advisory council chaired by the minister it advises, and the urgency is gone. It is hard to imagine anyone in Ottawa releasing a similar antisemitism priority list backed by a dedicated leader tasked with the issue.

Ofcom finds that facial age estimation algorithms miss teen ages by nearly two years, so a 15 year old can pass as 17. In other words, it can’t reliably enforce Bill C-34’s under-16 social media ban without requiring teens to provide government photo ID. nitter.cf/mgeist/status/21161621…

The UK and Canada are both pursuing under-16 social media bans. The UK asked its regulator, Ofcom, what effective age verification would require before setting the rules. Its answer: photo ID. Canada plans to ban first, with no standards in place. michaelgeist.ca/2026/10/ofco…

Bill C-34 already has two age verification mandates: under-16 for social media, under-18 for porn on regulated services. Bill S-209 would add a third with different standards covering every commercial porn site, plus Federal Court website blocking. nitter.cf/mgeist/status/21157920…
