One thing I wish new VAs understood: Getting an agent isn't the top of your mountain. It's actually the bottom of another, larger mountain. You not only have to be competitive enough to GET an agent. You now have to compete against me, your peers, AND the celebrities you look up to just to get heard by casting. When people say you need to be READY for an agent, that's part of what they're talking about. The other part is the lifestyle changes no one prepares you for. But please know, not every audition you submit to an agent gets heard. Many times your agent is only allowed to send their top 3, top 5 auditions & you gotta make it through THAT cut first. That's why I laugh whenever I hear people complain about casting calls closing too early & how it's a waste of time. That's a daily occurrence with big agency work. Unfortunately, you don't get to coast at an agency, no matter how glamorous or easy you fantasize it is once you have an agent. You get an agent and have to learn entirely new exercises to build entirely new muscles you didn't know you needed. Your talent has to be ELITE COMPETITIVE, not just good enough. Anyone in this business long enough has to constantly learn new things and get better. Or they find other non-talent ways around that part lol. But if you expect to get an agent and coast, you've got some hard truths coming.

I think it is important to express your views and who you are online. That being said, if you are a VA on your active, professional account, you may want to at least attempt to keep your feed SOMEWHAT clean. You can say everything you need and want to say without making it incredibly offensive. Clients and CD's look at your socials. They want to see you being a real person engaging in your craft. They generally don't like to see your timeline filled with unhinged, profanity laced tirades and controversial hot takes. Save it for your personal accounts and go nuts. Just saying!

Congrats everyone! Also, this is a great list of folks to follow if you want to build your social media network of working VA’s. It is always a good idea to follow working actors and see what they are up to - and to support them!

Theres an unspoken contract you sign in this industry where if you don't talk about being a voice actor at least every 5 minutes then the world forgets that you're a voice actor. Sorry I don't make the rules.

So I had a general rate calculator made. I had AI build it. (Yes, I used AI. No, I don't think all AI is bad. Yes, using AI to replace art and humanity is bad. No, using AI to figure things out is not bad. Notice how I did not say that I created this? I did not do anything other than ask the magic black box to spit something out for me.) The cool thing about it is that I have it set to adjust for the location internationally. It is based off of GVAA rates and provides a general range. This stuff is not set in stone, but, it can help you to at least request proper rates when someone asks you for a quote. No one wants to see us underpaid. If you see something incredibly wrong or weird or missing, let me know and I will ask the machine to do it better. There are dropdowns for genres, type of project, market, usage terms, etc. Here it is. Go nuts. - sites.google.com/view/voiceo…

Healthcare shouldn't be harder to access just because you're a freelancer... For many voice actors, working independently means navigating health insurance without the benefits of a traditional employer. Finding coverage that's affordable and is accessible to self-employed professionals can be a challenge. NAVA is proud to help bridge the gap by offering our members another option for healthcare coverage. Yeah. It is sad. It's no long enough just to be good, and if you're remote you have to be good AND be an engineer AND a marketer AND an agent, because everything is easier in a hub. But it's the price we pay for freedom, sustainability, and being able to afford to live.

OK... do I really need to start caring about "follower count" and social media presence just to get cast in stuff now? I keep seeing all these folks literally crying in videos about how this is a thing. That is really sad, but also... yikes. Can't we all just start following each other so this isn't a problem? I try and follow tons of people because I care and I want people to have followers and I want to see what you say and do. Can we just start doing the same thing for other actors so we don't need to needlessly worry about something so trivial? Can people who are casting actors - please - worry a little more about the quality of the actor for the role and a little less about the "exposure" from social media followers?
