Yesterday, DG Dr Jide Idris, appeared before the Joint House of Representatives Committees on Infectious Diseases, Health Institutions, Aviation and Interior at a public hearing on Nigeria’s preparedness and response to Ebola.
The hearing provided an opportunity for NCDC to brief the Committees on the country’s preparedness, preventive interventions and response activities following the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the subsequent confirmation of an imported case in Nigeria on 20 October 2026.
In his presentation, the DG highlighted NCDC’s preparedness initiatives, surveillance activities, institutional coordination and the swift response activated following confirmation of the case, demonstrating the role of Nigeria’s public health security infrastructure in early detection and outbreak containment.
The Committees commended NCDC for its prompt, proactive and coordinated response to the outbreak and efforts to prevent further transmission.
NCDC appreciates the continued support and legislative oversight of the National Assembly in strengthening Nigeria’s health security and remains committed to working with relevant stakeholders to prevent, detect and respond effectively to public health threats.

We are conducting an Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Training of Trainers for facility IPC focal persons and frontline healthcare workers across public and private health facilities in the FCT to strengthen preparedness for Ebola.
The training focuses on practical skills in early identification and triage of suspected cases, infection prevention practices, standard and transmission-based precautions, and appropriate use of personal protective equipment.
With support from @WHO, @AfricaCDC, @UNICEF and @DRASA, the initiative will equip facility IPC focal persons to cascade knowledge and strengthen IPC implementation across healthcare facilities.
Through a better-prepared, well-equipped healthcare workforce, we are strengthening facility readiness, protecting healthcare workers and patients, and preventing healthcare-associated transmission.

This week, NCDC and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Public Health Team, in collaboration with partners and stakeholders, supported by UNICEF, took Ebola disease awareness to the streets through a motorised community sensitisation campaign.
The team reached residents with important information on Ebola prevention, shared educational materials and engaged directly with members of the public, answering questions and addressing concerns.
The campaign is in line with our commitment to making accurate, life-saving information accessible to all.
Keeping our communities informed is key to keeping our communities safe:
✅ Wash your hands regularly with soap and clean running water.
✅ Avoid direct contact with sick persons and their body fluids.
✅ Seek medical care early if symptoms appear.
✅ Avoid handling or consuming bush meat and wild animals.
✅ Avoid rumors and follow only trusted sources of information

🚨 PRESS STATEMENT
NCDC is working with the Adamawa State Government to investigate two suspected Ebola cases reported in Yola, which were isolated and tested. Samples turned out NEGATIVE for Ebola virus after two rounds of testing.
The index case previously confirmed in the FCT remains the only confirmed case reported in Nigeria to date.
The public is urged to remain calm and obtain information from official government and public health channels.
Anyone experiencing symptoms such as fever, severe weakness, headache, muscle pain, vomiting, diarrhoea or unexplained bleeding, particularly following relevant exposure, should seek immediate medical attention and inform healthcare workers of any relevant travel or contact history.
BREAKING: UPDATE ON EBOLA DISEASE IN NIGERIA
Two suspected cases of Ebola disease have been identified in Nigeria’s North-East region. Both individuals have been isolated, contact identification and listing is ongoing, and laboratory testing is being conducted.
Being classified as suspected cases does not mean they are confirmed Ebola cases; confirmation is subject to laboratory results.
The public is advised to maintain good hand hygiene, practise enhanced sanitation and follow guidance from public health authorities.
Further updates will be provided as verified information becomes available.

#TodayInNCDC The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) conducted a post-corrective action visit to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital to assess the facility’s readiness to manage suspected and confirmed cases of Ebola disease should the need arise.
The visit focused on the functionality of the treatment centre, case management capacity, and the adequacy of existing structures to support effective case management and response in the event of additional suspected or confirmed cases in Nigeria.
Key partners, including the World Health Organisation (WHO), UNICEF, Africa CDC and the IRUA Specialist Hospital focal person, participated in the engagement, highlighting the importance of collaboration in strengthening national preparedness and response capacity.
As part of ongoing efforts to enhance health security, NCDC continues to work with healthcare facilities and partners to strengthen preparedness, ensure resp6onse structures are functional, and support a coordinated response to potential Ebola cases.

As Nigeria intensifies its response to the single confirmed case of Bundibugyo virus disease (BVD), NCDC, DRASA Trust, CICaPS and partners convened trained Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) professionals at an alumni assembly themed “500+ IPC Alumni: One Network, Many Actions!”
The assembly was a call to action, mobilising IPC alumni across Nigeria to strengthen infection prevention practices in healthcare facilities, sensitise and support frontline healthcare workers, and promote early identification and reporting of suspected cases.
With Nigeria currently reporting one confirmed case, these coordinated actions are particularly important. By strengthening IPC practices across healthcare facilities and communities, the alumni network will help establish an IPC ring of protection, reducing opportunities for transmission and supporting efforts to contain the outbreak and prevent this single case from leading to further infections.
This initiative demonstrates the lasting value of investing in a skilled health security workforce. Professionals trained over the years are now being mobilised to put their knowledge and experience into practice when the country needs them most.
It also highlights the power of collaboration. Working alongside IPC professionals, trained health media fellows will help amplify their actions, raise public awareness, counter misinformation and mobilise Nigerians to adopt behaviours that prevent infection.
One trained workforce. One connected network. Many coordinated actions to protect Nigerians.
