Our release process continues to evolve in response to feedback from the associated academic communities. In our view, these manuscripts are best understood as a form of raw research data. To convert this raw research data into scientific understanding, in this release we are experimenting with a new approach. We reached out to external experts and asked them to act as shepherds, organizing groups to understand the new results. They advised three different release strategies: For the math result, release the AI output, leaving researchers free to organize their own efforts to explain the result. For the computer science result, form an external group of collaborators to explain the result, while making the AI output publicly available for anyone to examine and build on. For the physics result, form an external group of collaborators and defer to them on the release of materials.

Amazing public good!
After almost 10 years of work corporateownershipdata.com now makes available all publicly available ownership records of 7,156 publicly traded firms, not just the S&P 500, including dual-class shares.

I resigned from Anthropic today. I spent the last three years doing pretraining research at both OpenAI and Anthropic. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives. More thoughts below.

Il sonno della ragione economica genera mostri! (semi-cit)

Last time I saw @BarbaraBiasi, she was giving a seminar at @NYUFASEcon, casually pumping while doing her 1:1s. What a rock star! Read her beautiful story below, where she reflects on the importance of women before us paving the way and serving as role models.
Its story-day! This week we hear from the amazing @BarbaraBiasi who shares a heartwarming tale about how kids actually made her a better researcher and the crucial importance of role models. “I did not get there alone. Supportive colleagues, especially women, helped me in ways too numerous to count … They showed me, again and again, that motherhood and ambition did not have to cancel each other out.” open.substack.com/pub/oneext…

the way some economists advocate for industrial policy is akin to picking the performance of the top decile of hedge fund performers (ex post) as evidence that active management adds alpha in asset management, and then simply forgetting about the bottom 90%.

It would be stronger if they provided any numbers to back up their case that the government allocating capital has worked. What was the IRR on all this government investment in China? Seems to me like we're cherry picking ex post. Just one well-known counterexample: China has 60 to 80 million empty apartments built by the government. Let's take a deep breath. China's GDP per capita in dollars is 12K. US GDP per capita is 82K. China's growth has stalled. It has a massive fiscal problem in state and local government. Its university grads can't find jobs. Not much to emulate.
Strong case for industrial policy by Autor and Handson, to combat China shock 2.0 I suspect this is the beginning of a new wave of economics on the design and implementation of industrial policy nytimes.com/2025/07/14/opini…

From the FT Weekend Essay by Gillian Tett “‘A group of economists at Stanford and Columbia have set up the so-called Global Capital Allocation Project (GCAP) Allocation Project to conduct research that “leverages recent advances in large language models to identify the areas of the global economy that are particularly vulnerable to geoeconomic pressure”. Their core thesis is that China today has hegemonic control of manufacturing (via its dominance of key supply chain nodes such as rare earth minerals) but the US has hegemonic control of finance (because of the dollar’s reserve currency status).   Hence one way to make sense of White House actions is that America is trying to undercut China’s industrial hegemony while also protecting its own financial dominance, and vice versa. Tech hegemony, in my view, is still being contested.  Such thinking not only explains US-China relations; it also sheds light on how other countries are reacting, since the priority for them now is to create “anti-coercion” strategies, as the GCAP says. Unsurprisingly, this is sparking intense debate in places such as Britain”
