Most investors have no idea of the damage that the mere distraction of talking to them does to a startup. Here's a typical example. And this is a YC company too, meaning they have an easier time fundraising than the median startup.

Some man-made things are obviously very dated. And if they can be more dated, they can be less dated too. Are the least dated man-made things timeless? If not they're close.

Ridiculous looking haircuts are not a modern phenomenon. Indeed you can pretty much assume that the most fashionable haircut now will look ridiculous later in photographs.

Why do more men than women end up in some jobs, and more women than men in others? A new paper shows that a big part of it is that men and women are interested in different stuff. stevestewartwilliams.com/p/m…

Mike Rogers is one of the chief architects of the modern surveillance state and a champion of the forever war. Privacy and war are two of the very few issues on which a member of Congress can make a difference with a marginal, decisive vote. Michigan, let’s make sure Rogers gets nowhere near the U.S. Senate.

This is an important trial. The mainstream view has been that statins reduce the progression of atherosclerosis and stabilize plaques, but don’t reverse it. That’s not true. They reverse it as well.
🫀 Can coronary atherosclerosis actually regress? Our new randomized FLOWPROMOTE trial analysis, published TODAY in JAMA Cardiology, shows remarkable coronary plaque regression with intensive LDL-C lowering! Atherosclerosis is not necessarily a one-way process. 📄 JAMA Cardiology: doi.org/10.1001/jamacardio.2… #Atherosclerosis #LDL #Cardiology #CCTA

This @NewYorker story is so good, and so important for everyone to understand. Through the lens of semiconductor manufacturing, it highlights the interconnectedness of today’s world and puts to shame anyone who thinks that we can go back to a world shaped only by national rivalries rather than international cooperation and trade. “The semiconductor supply chain is a planetary superorganism with its own ecology…. Globalization has become tainted in our eyes, as if it necessarily constitutes a zero-sum enterprise. And its mercenary form—which is also its most common form—has indeed inflicted harm. But the global semiconductor supply chain reflects an alternative pathway. It has united its participants in the pursuit of something profoundly difficult that could not have been achieved in the absence of intercontinental solidarity.” newyorker.com/magazine/2026/…

It's almost hard to believe, but the US has only a single factory left that makes HMX and RDX, the explosives in nearly every modern missile and bomb - an aging wwii plant in Tennessee that's massively backordered. A few years ago, a startup called Solugen was making chemicals for the petroleum industry, when by happenstance they heard about this problem. It turns out that the same infrastructure they'd built for other chemicals was a perfect fit to make energetics. So, that's what they're doing now. They can already make 1/10 of what the old US army plant makes, and in the future will make much more. This is the SpaceX/Anduril moment for the US military explosives market.
In four days of the Iran war, the US and its allies fired more Tomahawks than the US builds in four years. One bottleneck is energetics production. So we built a 100% CONUS energetics supply chain with our own capital. Our modular solution makes HMX and other advanced energetics, the explosives in nearly every US missile and munition. The US builds about 85 Tomahawks a year. The Army's only plant making the explosives inside them is 84 years old, and its $1B upgrade has slipped from 2025 to 2029 or later. That plant is Holston, in Tennessee. It makes about 3% of what it made in 1944, and buyers wait one to two years for its explosives. Holston makes its chemicals and its explosives on one site, so every expansion means building both plants there. A plant like that takes billions of dollars and about a decade to build. Permitting this in the US is a nightmare, because you’re taking on the risk of a chemical plant and an explosives plant at once. What could possibly go wrong. We separated the two. Terraforge 1, Solugen’s Houston plant, is tied into Houston's petrochemical infrastructure and makes inert precursors: white powders about as flammable as sugar. They can ship via FedEx or UPS, and sit in an ordinary warehouse. Discreet. Odin Energetics, our joint venture with Kraken Kinetics, turns them into explosives in shipping container reactors called Nitroforges. It took us six months to build the first one, and they can be set up where the weapons are needed. On-demand energetics. That means no stockpiles or concentrated first-strike targets. Kraken builds the warheads, so every step from chemical to warhead happens in the US. Together we stood up the entire chain from raw chemical to finished warhead. Odin can already make close to a tenth of what Holston makes in a year. To make more, we’re building several factories at the same time. wsj.com/politics/national-se…

What’s coming was avoidable, but Republicans in Congress let Trump start a war, increase spending, arm a genocide, betray MAHA, and cover up for Epstein’s coconspirators. I was ousted with over $30 million of foreign lobby money for refusing to go along, and here we are.

It is a great day for housing affordability in Pittsburgh. This historic legislation is the product of years of advocacy, but we are just getting started!
