CPJ is grateful to #PressFreedom advocate @SenPeterWelch for speaking on the Senate floor about American journalists who have been targeted by Israeli forces while doing their jobs.
Israel has been targeting and killing journalists in connection with their reporting for decades, and this deadly pattern must end. #EndImpunity
This is the moment an Israeli settler kicks Palestinian freelance journalist Salman al-Khatib as he and other journalists covered Israeli demolitions near Birzeit in the occupied West Bank.
Al-Khatib’s experience was not isolated. In the first eight months of 2026, CPJ reviewed at least 16 incidents in which Israeli settlers assaulted, threatened, or obstructed journalists in the West Bank, affecting at least 35 journalists.

CPJ welcomes the significant vote by 47 U.S. Senators on September 29, calling for justice and accountability for the killings of civilians, including Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, by Israeli forces and settlers.
More than four years after Abu Akleh was killed by Israeli Forces in May 2023, her family is still waiting for justice and accountability.
Abu Akleh’s murder was not an isolated incident; rather it embodies a deadly pattern in which Israeli forces have been targeting and killing journalists in connection with their reporting for decades.
Those killings have dramatically spiked since October 7, 2023, during which Israel has killed at least 189 Palestinians in Gaza.
The pursuit of justice and accountability must continue to ensure the impunity enjoyed by Israel for crimes against journalists is brought to an end. CPJ will continue to press for that accountability.

🎥 "Let my father return home."
One year ago, unidentified men abducted Mamoudou Babila Keita's father from his home, in retaliation for his journalistic work.
Despite the authorities' announcement of the opening of an investigation, Keita and his family are still without news of Elhadj Adama Keita, who is now 76 years old.
The Committee to Protect Journalists calls on the Guinean authorities to act to ensure the safe return of Elhadj Adama Keita to his loved ones.

On this day 25 years ago, journalist Martin O’Hagan was shot dead in Northern Ireland. His family is still waiting for justice.
“It’s shameful that 25 years have passed and we are still waiting for justice for Martin O’Hagan. He was killed to silence his reporting on paramilitary crime, and the failure to punish his killers is not only crushing for those who knew him, but also fuels the unacceptable level of threat and violence which journalists in Northern Ireland continue to face today,” said CPJ's Fiona O'Brien.
CPJ and @AmnestyUK are calling for a fresh investigation, and for the immediate publication of a long delayed Ombudsman’s report into police handling of the case.

#Eritrea 🇪🇷 As foreign minister Osman Saleh prepares to address #UNGA on Monday, CPJ calls on authorities to free the #Eritrea16, among the longest-detained journalists in the world. Most have been arbitrarily imprisoned for 25 years, without trial or access to their families.
In 2016, Osman told Radio France International that the journalists were alive and would face trial "when the government decides."
CPJ calls on Eritrean authorities to account for these journalists’ health, whereabouts, and legal status. Their families have a right to know.

“It’s extremely uncomfortable to be here as a journalist because I’m not doing my journalistic work, but I’m forced to be advocating for Georgian media and for my colleague Mzia Amaglobeli, who became the most targeted in this wave of repression against independent media in Georgia,” said Georgian journalist Irma Dimitradze. #FreeMzia
Georgia 🇬🇪 :As Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze prepares to speak at #UNGA on Thursday, CPJ calls on #Georgia to immediately release award-winning journalist Mzia Amaglobeli, who has been unjustly detained since January 2025.
Mzia is being used as an example to intimidate what remains of Georgia’s free press and CPJ will continue to press for justice for her.
Georgia's international partners, many of whom are also in New York for #UNGA, must also redouble their efforts to push for her early release.
Watch CPJ's Fiona O'Brien, @JWhittingdale and @irmadimitradze explain why this case is so important. #FreeMzia #journalismisnotacrime

“Dawit Isaak has spent 25 years in Eritrean detention without charge or trial. His name should not have to be invoked year after year to remind the world of this monumental injustice. Eritrea must finally free Dawit and every journalist still detained, and tell families what happened to those who died or disappeared in custody.” — Angela Quintal, @CPJAfrica Regional Director
📰 September 23 marks 25 years since Swedish-Eritrean journalist #DawitIsaak was forcibly disappeared and arbitrarily detained by Eritrean authorities.
Arrested alongside several fellow journalists in September 2001, Mr. Isaak and his colleagues are now the world’s longest-detained journalists.
The RWCHR along with a broad international coalition of human rights groups is urging 🇸🇪 Swedish and 🇪🇺 EU officials to take meaningful action on his case while there is still time.

Ahead of Thursday’s meeting between Chinese leader Xi Jinping and @POTUS , CPJ took to the streets of Washington, DC, calling for the release of jailed publisher Jimmy Lai and veteran journalist Dong Yuyu.
In a joint mobile billboard campaign with @RSF_inter, the two press freedom groups urged Trump to raise the cases of Lai and Dong with Xi. China has the world’s highest number of imprisoned journalists, with at least 50 behind bars simply for doing their jobs.
