Dan Skelton on The New Lion: 🗣️ "He won the Unibet Hurdle last season and ran really good races in defeat over two miles in the Champion Hurdle and two and a half at Aintree, so I don't know where we're going to start this term with him or over what trip. We'll probably start at two miles and work our way up, but a lot depends on the ground. Don't forget last season was only his second over hurdles and there was more to be learned, and he learned it. It was frustrating not to win one of the big ones but that's the biggest league of all and I was very happy with him. I think there's more to come and it could be over three miles – his breeding suggests that's an option – but it could just as easily be that he learned enough last season that we can keep him at a shorter trip. We'll see where he takes us."

Dan Skelton on Grey Dawning ahead of the season: 🗣️ "He won the Betfair Chase over three miles and a furlong last season and then at Aintree over two and a half, so we've decided to aim him at the Betfair again and then go down the intermediate route. He was in great form for the Gold Cup last season and ran really well to finish fourth but my feeling was that if he didn't win that one then he wasn't going to win one, so we'll try a change of tack and point him towards the Ryanair instead this time."

2026 v 2017 – the same (but different) In a couple of senses 2026 has followed a similar pattern to 2017, even if it has felt like something of an outlier at times by O'Brien's standards, thanks to this year's health blip and the feeling that the two-year-olds were carrying an awful lot of the load in the second half of the year, as some of the team's Classic winners failed to add to their tally.

Billy Lee on the relentless nature of being a jockey: 🗣️ "If you look at the race meetings compared maybe to 20 years ago, you had a lot of mixed cards but Covid kind of put paid to that. It’s six, seven and eight rides a day now, whereas it used to be three or four. "When I started off, racing would be busy during the summer but it would level out when you got to October. You might have three meetings a week. Only in the last week, there were seven days in a row. It’s full on. "I wanted to be champion jockey, so I have to take every chance and keep every door open. You can’t stand still."
