Disagreement is inevitable in the church. Division doesn’t have to be. Philippians 4 shows us how relationship and a shared mission can help us navigate conflict and pursue unity. Relationship + Shared Mission = Unity. --- Churches are made up of people—which is a good thing. But where people are, disagreement is inevitable. So, how do we navigate conflict without letting it divide us? --- 1️⃣ Start With the Relationship - In Philippians 4:1, Paul addresses conflict by first referring to the church as his “dearly loved and longed for brothers and sisters.” - He recognizes them as family—not enemies. They belong to one another because they first belong to Jesus. - We must learn to treat our relationships as bigger than our disagreements. 2️⃣ Both Parties Take Responsibility - Paul urges both Euodia and Syntyche to “agree in the Lord” (Phil. 4:2). - He doesn’t assign blame to one side. Instead, he calls both to pursue reconciliation. - Sometimes, the disagreement isn’t the problem. It’s what we do with the disagreement. 3️⃣ Choose Reconciliation Over Sides Paul asks a trusted partner to help these women navigate their conflict (Phil. 4:3): - not to decide who’s right - not to pick a side The goal is restored fellowship. Address conflict without creating a villain—be a helper, not a referee. 4️⃣ Remember the Shared Mission - Paul reminds them that these women had “contended for the gospel” alongside him (Phil. 4:3). - Their disagreement wasn’t the whole story. The gospel was their unifier—and their reason for walking together in the first place. - Relationship + Shared Mission = Unity. --- Your church will have disagreements. But the goal is never to create a church where nobody disagrees. It’s to cultivate a church that can stand united despite inevitable conflict. Because unity doesn’t require uniformity. --- Sometimes, we have to step into the problems of our people and help them remember what keeps our eyes on Christ instead of ourselves. --- Want to take a deeper dive?
