ABA story time from Terry Pluto’s Loose Balls:
In February 1976, the Virginia Squires were running out of money. To raise cash, they tried selling 100 advertising banners for $5,000 apiece. They sold just 46.
The players were also waiting on overdue paychecks and threatened to boycott a game in Denver.
The Denver Nuggets agreed to give Virginia money from the game’s ticket sales so the Squires would take the court.
The Squires played. They lost 135–113.

The Boston Celtics fielded the first all-Black starting lineup in NBA history on December 26, 1964, against the St. Louis Hawks.
After an injury to power forward Tom Heinsohn, Willie Naulls replaced him for 12 games on beginning on December 26, 1964 in St. Louis. The Celtics went on to win all 12 ot those games.
Coach Red Auerbach a New Yorker of Jewish descent from Brooklyn ignored all the racist rants that were thrown his way in the segregationist 1960's and held to his beliefs that a man must be judged on his merits and abilities, and not the color of his skin!
That historical starting team was • Bill Russell 6, • Sam Jones 24 • K.C. Jones 25 • Satch Sanders 16 • Willie Naulls 12.
Satch Sanders was from Harlem New York!
