The future of the alligator species could come down to a one- or two-degree temperature difference, according to new research from @UGAEcology. A small change of the temperature could determine whether a gator develops as a male or female, and that could have huge ramifications for alligator populations as temperatures rise. 🔗: t.uga.edu/4z28jiq

Recent declines in bobwhite population have researchers searching for answers to boost the popular gamebird’s numbers. A new study from @UGAWarnell suggests the birds’ survival may depend on where they choose to roost. They examined the birds’ habitat choices and found that bobwhites were more likely to survive than the birds that roosted in less protected areas. 🔗: t.uga.edu/4jUcrNC

Did you know blueberries contribute nearly $4M to Georgia’s economy—over four times the economic output of peaches? That transformation didn't happen by accident. It started when University of Georgia scientists began breeding weather-resistant blueberry varieties in the 1940s. Today, UGA researchers are actively solving top legislative priorities for agribusiness: mitigating farm labor shortages through mechanical harvest research and protecting crops against unpredictable freeze events. t.uga.edu/4itl2Wt

This past summer, food vulnerability was top-of-mind for many Americans as thousands of people across the US reported symptoms of a Cyclospora infection. It's a compelling reminder of how a contaminant can affect food supplies & threaten public health. Before food makes its way to grocery shelves, it’s vulnerable to contaminants & susceptible to spoilage — especially during storage & transport. But @UGA_CollegeofAg researchers are developing cutting-edge technologies that will improve the process of moving food through the supply chain. 🔗: t.uga.edu/4i7WbXT

Disease and heat pose a deadly combination for coral reefs according to research from @UGAEcology. Previous research has shown that heat stress can increase disease and kill coral, but the new paper found that corals with preexisting disease conditions were particularly vulnerable. 🔗: t.uga.edu/3VUcrTR

Last spring, UGA senior research scientist Scott Noakes approached undergraduate marine science student Grace Maavere with a special project. Scott tasked Grace to realistically paint a cast of a 36,000-year-old gray whale mandible which he discovered in 2006 during a dive about 20 nautical miles off Sapelo Island. The discovery offered important evidence that prehistoric gray whales once traveled along Georgia's coast. 🔗: t.uga.edu/4i5wG9D

The University of Georgia has played a large role in reviving Georgia's oyster industry. But we didn't stop there ... we are working with the local community, restaurants across the state and organizations like Shell to Shore to use recycled oyster shells to strengthen the state's coastline and safeguard against future weather events. t.uga.edu/3W6TqNW
