Sina Zalbegi, a Ph.D. in Engineering candidate, presented his research at the One Water Technical Conference and won first place. He said he received thoughtful questions and feedback from industry professionals during and after his presentation, and he has kept up the relationships he built there. “Being at UToledo also makes this research especially meaningful because many of the water-quality challenges I study are directly connected to Lake Erie and the surrounding community,” SIna said. “It allows me to work on research that has a very visible connection to the region where I study and live.” bit.ly/4zQJqak

From tracking harmful algal blooms to understanding public health trends and improving how people and products move through a city, location data can reveal patterns that shape real-world decisions. UToledo’s new Geospatial Science Program — the first of its kind in Northwest Ohio — will prepare students to work with that data using digital mapping, remote sensing, geographic information systems and emerging AI tools. The program builds on UToledo’s existing strengths while preparing graduates for careers in areas including public health, government, logistics, market research and supply chains. utoledo.edu/spotlight/geogra…

Darine Schreidah, an honors senior studying psychology on a premed track is preparing for a career focused on helping others through research and community service. Her research reflects a broader interest in the relationship between mental and physical health. Through an Honors College capstone project she will work with student participants who are starting a new antidepressant or anti-anxiety medication to examine their perceptions and experiences with their medications. “The University of Toledo has a strong emphasis on research. I was able to get involved in research very early on as a freshman, which isn’t necessarily the case at much larger institutions,” Darine said. bit.ly/4yALTEQ
