Happy Friday?
The S&P 500 has lost over $1.2 trillion in market cap today...
π΄ Dow Jones -0.96%
π΄ S&P 500 -1.87%
π΄ Nasdaq -3.70%
The stock market has NEVER done this after a midterm election...
Since 1950, the S&P 500 has finished higher 12 months after EVERY single U.S. midterm election.
That's a perfect 19-for-19 record.
And the numbers get even more interesting:
π 100% of post-midterm years have delivered positive returns.
π +16.9% average return in the 12 months following the last 9 midterm elections.
π +30% return following the 1994 midterms.
But 2026 could put that historic streak to the test.
With stocks already posting double-digit gains this year, Treasury yields elevated, and inflation remaining a major concern, investors are facing a very different environment heading into November 3.
Will the stock market make it 20 for 20?
We broke down decades of market history, the numbers behind this incredible streak, and what investors should watch heading into the 2026 midterms.

A record 43% of builders are cutting prices and 65% are offering incentives (19th straight month above 60%).
The problem? Buyers simply can't afford the homes being built."

This is pretty crazy...

In each of the nine previous cycles, the S&P 500 was higher 12 months after Election Day...
The average total return over that period was 16.9%, with the best year coming after 1994, when the market advanced by over 30%.
This streak isnβt just limited to the past 35 or so years, either. Since the index was established in the 1950βs, there has never been a negative return in the 12 months following a midterm election.
However, 2026 is shaping up differently. Despite historical weakness during midterm years, the S&P 500 has already gained nearly 15% this year.
With elevated Treasury yields, persistent inflation, and geopolitical uncertainty, will the market follow its historical election cycle or break the trend?
