As October came to a close, Yiaga Africa #WTV observers were on the ground following PVC collection across several communities.
From Adamawa to Lagos, Ondo, Akwa Ibom and Taraba, their observations showed varying levels of turnout. While some residents collected their cards, others were still waiting for PVCs to become available.
The message is clear: collecting your PVC is an important step towards participating in the 2027 elections.
Have you collected yours?

It is encouraging that INEC has admitted its registration officials were responsible for the irregularities uncovered in the voter register. However, there must be serious consequences for those found culpable. This reinforces a fundamental point we have consistently made that Nigerians must not trust the BVAS and IReV than the people who operate them. Technology does not guarantee electoral integrity when those managing the systems are compromised. The personal integrity, and impartiality of INEC officials is critical for credible elections.
If a registration official can manipulate the voter register, what prevents a compromised election official from uploading falsified result sheets to IReV? Nigerians must therefore pay closer attention to the conduct of election officials, particularly those responsible for voter accreditation, results management and transmission.

Fake faces in the voters’ register? A court swapping out a governor’s name on the Imo West ticket? ECOWAS and the House of Reps breathing down INEC’s neck? PDP and APC still fighting over who made our soup smaller, fuel prices higher, and the cost of a pocket-friendly TGIF no longer friendly.

As our Election Manipulation Risk Index (EMRI) shows tampering with voter register has always been a tool for election manipulation used by politicians and compromised INEC officials. In the lead-up to the 2023 elections, there were confirmed cases of padding of the voter register. Some INEC officials implicated in these irregularities were reportedly investigated, yet the public never received an account of the disciplinary measures taken against those implicated.
In 2026, we seem to be witnessing a disturbing recurrence of the same problems. Will anyone be held accountable for manipulating or compromising the voter register?

INDEPENDENT NATIONAL ELECTORAL COMMISSION
PRESS STATEMENT
CLARIFICATION ON ALLEGED AI-GENERATED PHOTOGRAPHS IN THE PRELIMINARY REGISTER OF VOTERS
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has noted public concerns and reports circulating on social media regarding suspected AI-generated photographs appearing in the Preliminary Register of Voters recently published on its website.
The Commission wishes to clarify that the register published online on 26 October 2026 is the same preliminary register physically displayed at Registration Areas (RAs) nationwide from 9th to 15th October 2026 as part of the Display, Claims and Objections exercise.
During the physical display, a number of questionable registration records were identified and flagged for further examination. The Commission commenced the process of reviewing these records and taking appropriate corrective action in accordance with established procedures.
The online publication represents the original preliminary register and does not reflect all ongoing data-cleanup activities.
It is important to emphasize that the preliminary register is not the final certified register. The Display, Claims and Objections exercise is specifically intended to facilitate public scrutiny, identify inaccuracies and irregularities, and enable appropriate corrections before certification.
The Commission is also examining the circumstances surrounding the suspicious photographs, including possible technical or procedural lapses, and will take appropriate action based on verified findings.
The Commission appreciates the vigilance of citizens and stakeholders who have brought these concerns to public attention. Such scrutiny contributes to the process of improving the accuracy and integrity of the register.
INEC remains committed to completing the necessary verification, adjudication, and data-cleanup processes ahead of the scheduled certification of the final Register of Voters on 15th December 2026.
The Commission assures Nigerians that verified irregularities will be addressed through the applicable procedures and that further updates will be provided as the review progresses.

Platforms don’t just host information; their systems influence what people find, see and trust. So, what responsibility do search engines and AI platforms have when misleading content starts gaining traction?

INDEPENDENT NATIONAL ELECTORAL COMMISSION
PRESS STATEMENT
UPDATE ON THE DISPLAY AND PUBLICATION OF THE PRELIMINARY REGISTER OF VOTERS FOR THE 2027 GENERAL ELECTION
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) wishes to provide an update on the display of the Preliminary Register of Voters ahead of the 2027 General Election.
2. In accordance with Section 19 of the Electoral Act, 2026, the Commission conducted the physical display of the Register at Registration Areas nationwide from 9th to 15th October, 2026, providing registered voters the opportunity to inspect their particulars and submit claims and objections as prescribed by law.
3. The Commission has taken note of the concerns expressed by Nigerians and other stakeholders regarding the desirability of making the Register accessible through its online platform in addition to the physical display already conducted.
4. Accordingly, and in furtherance of its commitment to transparency, accessibility and public confidence in the electoral process, the Commission has decided to make available on its online platform display.inecnigeria.org the same Preliminary Register of Voters earlier displayed at the Registration Areas.
5. This additional measure complements the physical display already undertaken and is intended to facilitate wider public access to the Register. Meanwhile, the Commission continues to process claims and objections arising from the exercise in accordance with the Electoral Act, 2026, preparatory to the certification and publication of the Final Register of Voters on 15th December 2026.
6. The Commission appreciates the continued interest and constructive engagement of Nigerians and stakeholders and reiterates its commitment to transparency, accountability and the faithful implementation of the Electoral Act, 2026 in delivering credible elections.

When it comes to election results, seeing the numbers is only half the story. Nigerians also need to understand the process behind them.
@DCynthiaM Director of Programs at Yiaga Africa, on why transparency must extend from the polling unit to final collation.

Who does AI ultimately serve? Is it the people, or the systems shaping their lives?
At #AIDF2026, Tari Wills of Luminate reminds us that the future of AI and democracy must be rooted in the public interest.

AI can strengthen election management, but it can also expose vulnerabilities. At the AI and Democracy Forum 2026, Dr. Bayode, INEC’s Director of ICT, stressed the need for continuous security testing and collaboration with technology experts to identify and fix weaknesses before election day.
The takeaway: Secure the systems before the stakes are highest.

Technology may support an election. It cannot take responsibility for one.
Artificial intelligence can strengthen election administration, but it also raises critical questions about transparency, human oversight and accountability. At the AI and Democracy Forum (AIDF) 2026, one takeaway stood out: the integrity of an election depends not just on the technology deployed, but on the safeguards governing its use and the people held accountable for its outcomes.
As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections, the priority must be clear: establish safeguards, preserve human judgment in consequential electoral decisions, and ensure that every use of AI strengthens, not weakens public trust.
