I won’t speculate about what happened with the Free Press, but here’s an in-depth and respectfully challenging interview with Anand about the Daniel Penny/Jordan Neely case and his book on it by me and @nicolegelinas @THECITYNY thecityreporter.nyc/2026/10/…
On Sept. 29, I taped a long podcast for @TheFP, hosted by @Olivia_Reingold.
It was about the Jordan Neely/Daniel Penny case, which we both covered. It was a powerful conversation because there were real differences and I had space and time to challenge some of the Free Press’s priors about cities, crime, homelessness, and mental illness.
Therefore, it’s upsetting to learn that they have buried the interview. I understand that their orthodoxies might’ve been challenged, but this is the only interview out of dozens for this book where this happened. They’re giving excuses about not loving the direction the conversation took and are now completely ghosting.
I have appealed to Olivia, but the issue seems to be senior management.
It was a real, very human conversation, with live grappling across difference. That should be embraced and celebrated, not hidden or censored.
If @bariweiss and the Free Press can be persuaded to put the conversation out there in full, I would welcome the repair. Thank you for considering in good faith.

That’s impossible Anand! I was reliably informed that Bari Weiss was a free speech champion and anti-censorship!
In the meantime folks, watch my convo with Anand about his excellent book:

Open offer, sent with love: I will host you both for a drink and what I promise will be a lovely chat. You both believe in democracy. Many in our government don’t right now. There are so many richer ways to relate — and differ — than this. Let’s not be who the algorithms want!
Have you ever worked on a winning election? Or an election in general since you failed the nation in 2016 & couldn’t find the rust belt on a map? Truly the most useless voice in the Democratic Party who’s a shill for the donors dumb enough to pay attention to a washed up has been (if she ever even was)
There are some pundits whom everyone listens to, argues with, thinks about who are known to have little understanding of human beings on an intimate scale. I, for one, think the grasp of aggregate human behavior is connected to the ability to see and connect to actual people.
Before you listen to someone’s theory about what connects politically, inquire a little bit about how they were in the places where they have worked, what it was like to be around them, whether they actually ever understood anybody standing in front of them.
One day, when this is all over, we will be able to laugh at the fact that Donald Trump got too distracted by home renovation to do a proper authoritarianism.
I’m only half joking when I say this episode should add to the antiauthoritarian playbook: carrot as well as stick. Don’t just resist the authoritarian. Also give him some totally engrossing, addictive side project to distract him from full-fledged tyranny.
Read this story. What may have saved us was a wild combination of heroic resistance by regular people and a side passion that couldn’t be stopped.

When everyone was on their back foot in '25, Zohran changed the energy and found a formula for politics that was joyful, disciplined, and unafraid. Completely changed the game.
Donald Trump was always a mere symptom who craved the respect of being a disease.
Last night, the symptom was loudly repudiated. We’re still living with the disease. He was always just our shared darkness rendered as an operatic but small man.
The task now is to make America never again vulnerable to this kind of malicious, mendacious, idiotic attack. This was enough.

On a day like today, don’t just celebrate the new common sense, the new majoritarian thinking. Celebrate those who said some of the things that ultimately prevailed when they were unpopular, when they had real costs, when they were inconvenient — early.
What @jamestalarico is calling for in this powerful speech is turning the page not just on a presidency but an entire era and the culture of enmities that it fostered.
