How can creativity give new opportunities to young people in the criminal justice system? In our latest blog, we spoke with Blue Cabin and Nepacs about how they teamed up to deliver Bronze Arts Award through Creative Aid, a co-creation project with the young men at HMP/YOI Deerbolt. The project involved supporting the young men through the Bronze Arts Award process, while adhering to unusual rules - no scissors could be used, and there was no access to cameras or the internet, due to being in a prison setting. One of the aims is to support the young men to develop their confidence and skills, to lead on to other training and employment opportunities, whether that is within the prison, or when they are released. Young people put creativity, commitment and hard work into the arts, whether they’re creating, performing, exploring new art forms or developing their own ideas. Recognising this creative development can help young people value their progress, build confidence in their abilities and see where their interests and skills could take them next. Arts Award gives students the opportunity to turn those creative experiences into recognised achievements, adding value and visibility to what they accomplish through the arts. “No one has ever bothered to show me how to use a camera. People assume I don’t need to know.” This week on the blog, we speak to Tiffany Woods, Director of Activities & Impact at @VICTAUK, a national charity supporting blind and partially sighted children and young people aged 0–29. Tiffany explains that one of the questions VICTA hears most often about Arts Award projects, such as photography, is: “How does that work?” Through practical, hands-on experiences, VICTA shows blind and partially sighted children and young people that vision impairment needn’t be a barrier to exploring their creativity. Earlier this year, the Department for Education introduced Enrichment Benchmarks. They are designed to create a ‘structure against which schools and colleges can effectively evaluate their own provision and make appropriate and considered improvements to their offer.’ The framework requires schools not just to offer activities, but to demonstrate criteria such as participation, accessibility, pupil voice, partnerships, outcomes and continuous improvement. In our latest blog, we will be exploring how Arts Award can support you with achieving these eight benchmarks. Read the full blog here: hubs.la/Q04zggXR0

A celebration of creativity that brought a community together! Over the past year, Newminster Middle School has been celebrating creativity through the successful delivery of both Arts Award Discover and Bronze Arts Award. As a Trinity Champion Centre, the school received a grant from Trinity College London to expand opportunities for young people to engage with the arts and celebrate their achievements. The grant supported the 'Northumberland Wildlife Art Exhibition', a whole-school celebration inspired by the intricate biro pen artwork of contemporary artist Jane Lee McCracken. Jane visited the school to discuss her creative process and share her experiences as a professional artist with the pupils. The school hall and corridors were transformed into a professional gallery, and visitors were able to purchase tea towels and gift cards featuring pupils' artwork, giving children the experience of seeing their work turned into professionally produced merchandise. What is the Access Fund, and how does it help Arts Award centres deliver Arts Award projects to young people who face barriers to access and inclusion? The Access Fund provides grants of between £100-£1500 to Arts Award centres to support them to pilot, embed or develop their Arts Award work. Success stories of the Access Fund include: Southwark Inclusive Learning Service (SILS) - an alternative provision for young people excluded from mainstream education. They used the grant to work with graffiti artists to deliver workshops with young people across years 10 and 11, who learnt skills which they used to create a mural. The Complete Works Ltd - supporting young people with a range of SEN and out of education or employment. They used the grant to deliver a project based on drama, dance, film and photography. The funding allowed them to pay for professionals to run workshops on film techniques which the young people used to make their own documentaries.
