Children are especially vulnerable to environmental hazards following disasters. From contaminated water and unsafe living conditions to exposure to harmful substances, these risks can threaten children's health and well-being long after the immediate emergency has passed. During #ChildrensHealthMonth, ASPR is highlighting the Children's Environmental Health Post-Disaster Assessment Toolkit 2.0, a resource designed to help public health professionals, health care providers, emergency responders, and community partners identify and address environmental health risks affecting children during disaster recovery. The toolkit outlines four key areas for action: 🏠 Homes and residential settings: Identify and address environmental hazards where children live. 🏫 Community spaces: Assess potential risks in schools, childcare facilities, playgrounds, and other places children spend time. 🩺 Public health and clinical services: Strengthen access to the information and resources needed to respond to children's environmental health concerns. 🤝 Families and caregivers: Equip parents, guardians, and community members with information to help protect children from harmful exposures. Protecting children's health is an essential part of building healthier, more resilient communities.
