The two great wars decimated our men and decimated our congregations, those who returned from war were changed, when they re entered church they found church had changed, it was now weak, soft and effeminate. Niceties were being preached from the pulpit, the pain of war and searing loss was not medicated, treated or resolved in those pews for these war hardened men and they began to drift away, put off by the irrelevance and the ladies bickering about who was going to be on the flower arranging rota next month These men couldn’t speak of the horrors of war, no one understood, they became disillusioned and began to drift away. They could not in good conscience pass down a strong faith to their children because they had deep questions of their own that were not answered by the pulpit “why does God allow war? where are my fallen comrades dwelling in eternity? “can i be forgiven for things I’ve done on the battlefield?” “do i really have to forgive that bastard german sniper?” Next came the boomers, elated in a precious ignorance that presumed the previous generation had got it all wrong “Now its our time to shine! Lets have some fun! Lets live a little, lets throw off the depression of our fathers and lets go all out for peace ☮️ and love ❤️ maaaan! And thus ensued the swinging sixties, debauchery, dismantling of tradition, dismantling of the family unit, dissolution of marriage between one man and one woman The 70s fell headlong in hedonism and rejection of authority. And with the vietnam war providing a stark contrast between the new found peace and love motto and this new endless war, a generation deteriorated into a hairy, disenfranchised, stoned set of people who didnt own combs or razors The 80s proved mixed, with a left right divide growing. Conservatism had the upper hand but was tainted with the harsh realities of austerity and a widening in the gap between rich and poor, children out playing in the streets en mass, raising one another while parents busily contended with work and home The 90s felt different, we had pulled ourselves through it all, things were looking bright, neon clothing, ghetto blasters punching out gangster rap or ultra feel good dance/rave music. The American dream of the late 80s was live and kicking and we were having it large! Lulled into a false sense of security we let our guards slip and in 1997 came the cries of “New Labour are here for you all” For me personally this is a clear moment in time when liberalism, marxism and Godlessness was neatly packaged, boxed up and sold to the naive human psyche as the new God you didnt know you needed And it had a face to go with it, yes that smiling, twisted and conniving- Tony Blair He packaged it so well, we did not notice within that tidy looking box of positive sounding key phrases and declarations was hidden a noose for our necks. He and his ilk began to enshrine it in law and had us celebrate with him “Multicultural britain, opportunities for all” “Fairness” “Equality” It was a well built pitfall trap and britain fell in, high slippery sides But Christ is King! He has conquered, He is conquering and He will conquer Christ has been the answer through all generations If this generation will turn from their wicked ways He will be their God and they will be His people and no power or principality or scheme of man will ever pluck us from His hand Where sin is great, grace is greater still! I have a hope for Great Britain because my hope is built on nothing less than Jesus righteousness
