The Ocean Cleanup is now $40M/year short of what’s needed to stop up to 1/3rd of all plastic flowing into the oceans by 2030.
That’s less than 1% of what America spends on Halloween decorations each year.
Unsurprisingly, our first India deployments are catching a *lot*.

🏆 Celebrating @BoyanSlat, international recipient of the inaugural Young Energy Leader Award at the 2026 Abdullah bin Hamad Al-Attiyah International Energy Awards.
As founder of @TheOceanCleanup, Slat has transformed a school project into a globally recognised initiative tackling plastic pollution. From removing waste from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch to deploying solar-powered river Interceptors, his work combines engineering innovation with environmental action to protect the world’s oceans.
Congratulations on this distinguished recognition! 👏

With today’s announcement of Cartagena, The Ocean Cleanup has now signed agreements to deploy in all three of Colombia’s cities that emit plastic into the ocean (Cartagena, Barranquilla, and Santa Marta)
We’re coming to Cartagena 🇨🇴
We signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Cartagena Mayor’s Office to tackle plastic pollution in Cartagena’s waterways and prevent waste from reaching the Caribbean Sea.
Cartagena marks another step in our efforts across Colombia, where we’re working with local partners to stop plastic pollution at its source.

¡Llegamos a Cartagena! 🇨🇴

I think an underappreciated factor of Elon’s impact on the world is how he’s raised the level of ambition for so many founders and engineers. I wouldn’t be surprised if these second-order effects end up having an even greater impact on the world than his own businesses.
Extraction site under construction at the Río Ozama in Santo Domingo.
The geotextile bags you see will form a foundation layer, stabilizing the ground for the heavy machinery we’ll use to extract the waste we’ll catch.
By the way, this is what currently happens to the coastline of Santo Domingo after a strong storm. Soon, this will be a thing of the past.
Pretty wild times at our Guatemala projects.
In just two weeks, we extracted 593 (!) truckloads of trash that would otherwise have flowed into the Caribbean.

U.S. Chief Design Officer @jgebbia shares some pretty absurd numbers about how Americans currently deal with the federal government:
- 29,000 government websites
- 10 billion hours spent navigating federal paperwork
- 87 clicks to replace a Social Security card

Earlier this month, we signed an MoU with the City of Santa Marta to deploy Interceptor solutions in the Río Manzanares and the Río Gaira!
El desastre inevitable despues de las lluvias. Hoy 4 pm. Rio Manzanares. @TheOceanCleanup we need your help.

Before... and after.
Interceptor 006 has been operational in the Rio Las Vacas, Guatemala, since June 2023. In this catch alone, over 210,000 kg of trash were stopped from reaching the Gulf of Honduras and the Caribbean Sea.
With our existing deployments in Guatemala, Honduras and Jamaica, and the new ones that are currently being developed for the Dominican Republic and Colombia, we'll soon have tackled most of the key plastic inflow points to the Caribbean.
Update: we are coming to Baranquilla, Colombia! 🇨🇴
We just signed an MoU with @alcaldiabquilla to deploy Interceptor solutions in the Magdalena River and the Caribbean...
...to protect key ecosystems such as mangroves and beaches, and safeguard the livelihoods of fishing and tourism communities.
Baranquilla, and the recently announced project in Santa Marta, mark the start of our work in Colombia: the 13th country we'll be operating in.
Barranquilla is part of our 30 Cities Program to stop up to one-third of all global river plastic by 2030...
And we still have more news on Colombia and other projects coming soon - stay tuned!

Buenas noticias: ¡estamos llegando a Barranquilla, Colombia! 🇨🇴
¡Sigan atentos!
