Delighted to be part of another book launch of “Barry Buzan and the Big Picture Approach”, this time at @LSEpublicevents with Robert Falkner, Ayse Zarakol, and editors Rita Floyd @floyd_rita and Laust Schouenborg. Barry is a fantastic scholar (and my co-author 🥰). Forgot to take a picture at dinner! 🤭#IR
What a treat it was to celebrate the life and work of Barry Buzan at CSD yesterday!🥰💃🏽 We had participation from colleagues at multiple universities in the first panel, which discussed the newly published book on Barry's big picture approach to international relations, edited by Rita Floyd and Laust Schouenborg. The second panel was a conversation between Barry Buzan and myself, followed by a Q&A and a reception. There was lots of useful advice for IR and for social sciences more generally, as well as some pointers for younger scholars. Step out of your silos, speak across disciplines, collaborate, co-author, and be driven by questions, not conformity!

We had a fantastic evening yesterday hosting Dr Younes Abouyoub from the United Nations who shared his views on ‘The UN’s Moment of Reckoning: UNGA81 - From Gridlock to Renewal?' at the CSD Seminar chaired by Dir. Prof Kaul. A thoughtful talk followed by wide-ranging Q&A, and networking, with participation from academics, students, visiting scholars, external policy colleagues. CSD Seminars feature a range of topics, are open to all, and free to register and attend. Check out the next one on our TL! ⬇️

Pictures from the farewell party for Peter, my ‘Kin Prof’, our outgoing President and VC, a fantastic, kind, warm-hearted, sportsman ‘chief-Dragon’ leader. One of the loveliest most-positive persons ever! He knew and greeted everyone by name, made it his business to know about and support people whether academics or support staff at any level. Like many of us whose lives he impacted for good, I will miss him! Wish Professor Peter Bonfield, OBE the very best in his dream role as Chief Executive of British Cycling! 💫🦋🚲💕

Fantastic evening at the seminar on ‘first ladies of authoritarianism’ with Dr Menshawy at CSD today 👏
Delighted to share that for the next CSD Seminar on Tuesday 13th October at 5 pm, Dr Mustafa Meshawy will be speaking about his work on First Ladies of Authoritarianism: Gender, Politics and Diplomacy in the Arab World and Beyond. Event open and free to all. Register at link here -- westminster.ac.uk/events/csd… The seeds of this project were planted on the streets of the Arab Spring. In 2011, while working as a BBC reporter covering anti-regime protests, Dr Menshawy heard demonstrators demanding not only the downfall of authoritarian leaders, but of their wives too. It left him with a puzzle: if first ladies are merely ceremonial figures standing beside powerful men, why were protesters so angry with them? A decade later, drawing on archives, fieldwork and interviews with people around leaders’ wives, Dr Menshawy revisits that puzzle by travelling to countries such as Egypt and Tunisia as well as by conducting interviews with those around first ladies of countries such as China. The talk explores how marriage, gender, glamour and political power intertwine at the heart of authoritarian rule, and how first ladies can both stabilise and destabilise regimes.

“Peaceful rise”?
A US warship in the middle of a Chinese desert? Some things have to be seen to be believed and @willripleyCNN shows just that in his new report:

I didn’t participate in Big Picture book project ed by Floyd & Schouenborg discussing Barry Buzan’s scholarship but I greatly enjoyed discussing its theory section at an event organised by @NitashaKaul. I’m grateful to Barry for suggesting that I take part in this as a third eye
