Skywalker Sound's Sound Designer and Re-recording mixer David Acord received the 2026 Excellence in Sound Design award at the Denver Film Festival last weekend. Following a screening of Tony Gilroy’s Behemoth!, Acord spoke with Denver Film Artistic Director Matthew Campbell at the Denver Center’s Ellie Caulkins Opera House about crafting the film’s soundscape.

The Sprocket Systems crew for Star Wars: Return of the Jedi gather in early 1983, whilst they were busily underway completing the last film in the original Star Wars trilogy. This shot was taken in front of the recently completed C Building at Lucasfilm's Kerner facility in San Rafael, which was purpose built for the sound and picture editors of Sprockets, as well as artists from Industrial Light & Magic and scientists from the Lucasfilm Computer Division. Within just a handful of years, C Building would see the births of the THX Sound System, the EditDroid and SoundDroid non-linear editing machines, and the Pixar Image Computer.

“I watched George up close,” Hobson said, explaining that she missed the earlier part of his career (the couple began dating in 2006 before marrying in 2013). “I wasn’t there for ‘Star Wars.’ I saw genius work, genuinely work, and it was awe inspiring. And he was fanatical at times, but the thing about a fanatical person is they’re a fan. He was a deep fan of these illustrators in this work, and he wanted them to be represented, and I became a deeper fan of his.”
