The Welcome to Country is a hand of friendship. It’s a blessing from traditional custodians who, despite nearly 250 years of colonisation and genocide, resist and flourish to this very day.
And that undiminished resistance angers the far right.
Indigenous Aussies should be wanting to mow us down in bloody revenge and yet they are inviting us to participate in a lovely tradition of peace and welcome. And we boo in their face? Are you kidding me??
We have insisted that indigenous people adopt every single one of our traditions and practices. Can we not participate in just ONE of theirs with good grace?
There is a sign at the entrance to every small town in Australia that reads ‘Welcome to..’. They should all be burnt to the ground. My supermarket has a sign out the front that says ‘Welcome’. How dare they? My friends ‘welcomed’ me to their BBQ. I don’t talk to them any more.
