Substantial update in Google Merchant Center. Thanks for the write up Brodie!
It’s live. The UCP integration hub just appeared in a client’s Merchant Center, and there’s a tab Google left out of the announcement. Quick context: UCP (Universal Commerce Protocol) is Google’s new open standard for agentic commerce. It lets shoppers check out on free listings directly inside AI Mode and Gemini. Google’s help doc covers onboarding: implement UCP, test in the sandbox, validate, go live. What it doesn’t cover is the Analytics tab that is now showing for a client of mine. Here’s what it tracks: 🛒 Transfers to merchant cart The shopper builds a cart on Google, then gets handed off to your site to finish checkout. → Cart transfers → Average cart value → Average product count → Average product value ⚡ Native checkout on Google The purchase is completed entirely on Google. The shopper never visits your site (but is credited to the organic shopping channel). → Buy button clicks → Purchase count → Average order value → Average product count → Average product value 🔗 Account linking This tracks shoppers linking their account with your store, so things like loyalty and saved details can carry across into the AI experience. Why this matters: For the first time, you can measure agentic commerce as a separate channel. You’ll see how many sales start in AI Mode or Gemini, and whether they finish on Google or on your site. If AI checkout takes off, “native checkout vs cart transfer” is going to be a big debate. Your share of conversions happening off-site is a metric that I will be curious to track for my clients that have opted in. Rollout notes: • Rolling out gradually in the US (it is showing for a US client of mine) • Australia and Canada are expected next year • Technical UCP implementation is required before onboarding

Anyone actually let an AI bot handle a full purchase for them? Research → cart → card details → checkout? Or is that still a hard no?

This looks like a great fun opportunity.
ANNOUNCEMENT: We’re hiring a Head of Content! This person will lead us to success in @ecommcowboy’s efforts across X, LinkedIn, YouTube, and more. You’ll work closely with me + @colindougherty. With mentorship to maximize your success — we want an intelligent, hungry person (i.e. dawg) to take this role. Over the next few years, become the top 0.1% in how to win on social and learn everything we know about DTC along the way. When you leave, you’ll have world-beating abilities. Why this role is a dream job: - Become an expert in internet entrepreneurship and social (spending lots of time w/ me) along the way. - Work from anywhere; remote is fine. - Small team, you’ll be exposed to everything. - Work in LIVE media: every day is gameday. - Meet the best and brightest in consumer. - Clear, defined mission. This is NOT an editor or low-level job. You’re gathering data, defining strategy, and making it happen from conception to publishing. – This is the most critical role we’ll hire for this year! Below is a video of why this is the most important post I’ll make all year, and in the comments is a full job description. – To apply: DM @chrislukehall and record a 1-minute video introducing yourself. Explain why you’re a good fit. PS - retweets/replies/bookmarks to this are much appreciated so we get the word out!

The 2026 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Digital Commerce feels like it's evaluating yesterday's market. Barely a mention of AI, despite commerce rapidly moving beyond traditional websites. Shopify, commercetools and Salesforce look well positioned. The rest?

Monitor Shopify, WooCommerce, and BigCommerce server logs in real-time. Advanced AI and search analytics for your e-commerce brands.
Salience is now live: connect your website for free and start measuring first-party data that most teams never see, let alone act on. Your server and CDN logs show what is actually reaching your site, what gets requested, how often crawlers return, what your infrastructure serves them and where things go wrong. Built alongside my co-founders @ndredding and @channel5 , Salience is designed to make that raw log data genuinely useful and actionable in real time. That includes seeing how search engines and AI crawlers such as ChatGPT and Claude interact with your site: which pages they visit, how frequently they return, what they request and whether they encounter errors. We originally built it off the back of problems we were solving for clients, particularly around crawling, indexing, and AI visibility across products, collections and editorial content, and large marketplace listing websites while giving teams access to a layer of insight they’d rarely had before. It’s designed for a broad range of sites, from Shopify and BigCommerce stores through to publishers, marketplaces and larger businesses running custom technology stacks. It’s also useful beyond #SEO and search, with insights for development, content and security teams, whether you’re in-house, an agency or a consultant. We’ve already had some great feedback from beta users, so thank you to everyone who has tested it so far. We’d love more of it: what’s useful, what’s missing and what could be better. There’s a working demo to explore, or you can connect a production site for free and see what your own data tells you. Please share it with anyone on your team who might find it useful. Visit: salience.com for more detail.

Technical SEO is so back! In the early days of Google, a lot of SEO was about making sure search engines could actually crawl, understand and index your website and get links, get so many links! Then, through the 2010s and into the early 2020s, the focus shifted much more towards content, digital PR (links), UX, brand, entities and trust. Technical SEO never went away, obviously, but on a lot of established websites it became less of the problem. That seems to have changed again. I’m seeing more technical SEO issues this year than I have in the last few years combined. A lot of that is down to how websites, apps, and web assets are being built and teams operate now. We’ve moved from fairly rigid CMS platforms to headless builds (often not required), custom frameworks, internal tools, dynamically generated pages and now a growing amount of vibe-coded websites, tools and content assets. That gives teams the autonomy they need and removes developer bottlenecks.  It also gives them far more ways to break things. - JavaScript rendering issues. - multiple frameworks. - subdomain party central. - Content that exists for users but not for crawlers. - Infinite URLs. - Cloaking. - Wrong status codes. - Internal links that aren’t really links. - Content hidden behind interactions. - Caching problems. - Server header responses. - Resources accidentally blocked. - Staging sites indexed. - Production sites accidentally noindexed. You’ve got Googlebot, Bingbot, AI search crawlers, training crawlers and retrieval bots, all behaving slightly differently. Some clients want certain AI bots to have access and others blocked. Some bots handle JavaScript better than others. Some follow the same controls. Others have their own. So after 20+ years of SEO, we’ve somehow ended up asking many of the same questions again. - Can the bot (all of them) access it? - Can it render it? - Can it understand what it’s looking at? - Is it seeing the version we actually want it to see? - Have we accidentally blocked it? The tech and internet has changed. A lot of the technical #SEO problems really haven’t.

There’s been a lot of recent reporting and discussion around Steven Bartlett and The Diary of a CEO. Rather than add another opinion, I wanted to see what the channel’s own public data could tell us. So I pulled together the history of the YouTube channel and analysed the videos, titles, guests, topics, colours, expressions, views and thumbnails over time. Some of the questions I wanted to explore: • When did business stop being the focus? • When did the topics broaden? • Why is Steven in every thumbnail? • How have thumbnails evolved? • Which topics perform best? • Do celebrity guests perform? • How much is A/B tested? The research maps those changes across the history of the channel, including the evolution of its content mix, titles and visual style. I’ve also published the underlying data and methodology openly, so journalists, researchers or anyone else interested can explore it themselves rather than relying on my findings. A lot more data and findings at doac.audits.com
