NEW: Justice Department asks judge to allow tree cutting to resume at East Potomac Park. Roughly 300 trees are still marked to come down after about 430 were cut in a single day earlier this month.
In a motion filed this afternoon, the government asked Judge Ana Reyes to suspend her own injunction while it appeals — which would clear the way for crews to come back. The government argues her order is too broad because it reaches the entire park and not just the golf course, and that it puts the judge in charge of decisions that belong to the Park Service.
That's now in front of her at tomorrow morning's hearing. The Park Service says it will close East Potomac Park south of Buckeye Drive on Nov. 15 — nearly all of Hains Point

I'm very curious to see how NLT makes the Rock Creek and Langston renovation projects pencil out, since part of the original deal contemplated using East Potomac Park (which is bigger and busier) to help offset the expense of fixing up and running the other two courses.
News: National Links Trust, the nonprofit that operates East Potomac, Rock Creek and Langston golf courses, said it has reached an agreement with the administration on a new lease for Rock Creek and Langston. Lease was signed on Oct. 28 and is for 50 years
NLT said its role at East Potomac will “end on or before Nov. 15”
BREAKING: The Nov. 15 closure at East Potomac Park is bigger than the golf course.
Latest DOJ filing: "On November 15, 2026, the National Park Service will close East Potomac Park south of Buckeye Drive, including the Golf Course, consistent with the President's directive."
That takes in nearly all of Hains Point — the running loop, the bike and pedestrian lane, the picnic areas. Not just the 36 golf holes.
The stated reason for closing that much: a seawall "currently crumbling into the Potomac River." The government says that closure "must occur in all events" — regardless of the golf course redesign.
The filing doesn't say how long the park stays closed.
Also in it: the Park Service signed a new lease with National Links Trust today. NLT stops operating East Potomac on or before Nov. 15 — but keeps running Rock Creek and Langston.
The filing then says the course must close "because there will be no company to operate that course."
More on DOJ telling federal judge the National Park Service will close East Potomac Park south of Buckeye Drive November 15. NPS blamed the seawall.
It also signed a new lease Wednesday removing the golf course's operator, National Links Trust.

NEW COURT FILING: The Interior Department now tells a federal judge it's working to close East Potomac Golf Course on Nov. 15.
Nine days ago, the Justice Department's No. 3 official told the same judge: "there is no plan to close the course."
That means one of the oldest municipal golf facilities in the country could be closed to play in 18 days. President Trump says it will reopen roughly 15 months later as a championship venue designed by Tom Fazio.

No new RFK stadium on the NCAA’s list of finalists to host the 2032-36 Final Fours.
Denver and Kansas City are. Both are building new stadiums targeted to open in 2031, a year AFTER the Commanders’ new stadium is scheduled to open.
Mayor Bowser pitched the partly taxpayer-funded stadium as a magnet for major sporting events. A source told me the Commanders are “disappointed” but ultimately its District’s job to attract major events.
A Mayor’s spokesperson referred questions to Events DC.

President Trump says East Potomac Golf Links will close Nov. 15 as scheduled, and the Interior Department will appeal a federal judge's order blocking further work at the century-old public course:

The judge in the East Potomac Golf case saw President Trump's post vowing to close the course — three and a half hours after she ordered his administration to stop.
Now she's hauling the Justice Department's No. 3 official into her courtroom for answers.
On Oct. 19, he told Judge Ana Reyes: "there is no plan to close the course."
She wants to know how that squares with what his boss, the president, just said.

Hours after a federal judge put his golf course project on hold, President Trump said he’s closing East Potomac on November 15 anyway. Trump calls federal judge’s East Potomac ruling unconstitutional, vows immediate appeal.

More from tonight's East Potomac ruling: the order may put President Trump's Nov. 15 start for construction on the golf course renovation out of reach.
Judge Reyes is requiring 10 business days' written advance notice before the golf course can close — in whole or in part — and before any irreversible change to the park's landforms, vegetation, course design, hydrology, pathways or structures.
Trump announced Oct. 18 on Truth Social the course would close to play Nov. 15 and that restoration work would begin that day. The DOJ has to file that notice in the next few days for the date the president set to legally happen.
BREAKING: A federal judge has blocked the Trump administration from cutting down any more trees at East Potomac Golf Links — with about four hours to spare before her earlier order expired at midnight.
Judge Ana Reyes granted a preliminary injunction Monday night barring the Interior Department and National Park Service from cutting, felling or "otherwise damaging or impairing" any tree in East Potomac Park without a court order. It also bars staging equipment inside a tree's root zone, which effectively halts site work.
Roughly 300 trees were slated to come down. President Trump has planned a massive tear down and renovation of the historic public course.

JUST IN: Judge Reyes has granted a preliminary injunction in the DC golf course case. The Trump administration is indefinitely barred from chopping more trees. They also must provide 10 days' notice before closing or making any "irreversible modification" to the course.
