“Civilizations die from suicide, not by murder,” according to 20th-century historian Arnold Toynbee. He claimed every great culture collapses internally due to a divergence in values between the ruling class and the common people…🧵

A British psychologist wrote a paper in 1983 that predicted every single problem we’re having with AI in 2026. It's called “Ironies of Automation” More advanced and reliable an automated system gets, the more crucial the human operator becomes. When engineers build an autonomous system, they automate the predictable tasks. What do they leave for the human? Only the most complex, chaotic, and dangerous edge cases that the engineers themselves couldn't figure out how to code. We are rapidly turning developers, writers, and operators into "AI supervisors." But cognitive skills deteriorate when they aren't actively used. If an AI agent or Copilot does 99% of the work, the human loses their deep mental model of the codebase or the system. When the AI inevitably hallucinates or fails, it hands control back to the human. But the human is now totally out of practice, right at the exact moment they have to step in and solve a catastrophic edge case. The Monitoring Illusion We expect humans to just "supervise" AI output. But humans are biologically terrible at maintaining vigilance while waiting for rare errors. Worse, if an AI is deployed because it processes data faster and handles more variables than a human, it is physically impossible for the human to check the AI's logic in real time. You cannot supervise a black box that thinks faster than you. We aren't removing human error with AI. We are just delaying it to the absolute worst possible moment. As we shift heavily into vibe coding and agentic workflows, the warning from 1983 is urgent. If you just mindlessly supervise the AI and stop practicing the core skill yourself, you won't be able to step in when the machine breaks.

I keep thinking about Amy Acton not picking up Ramaswamy’s concession call. She did not owe him the courtesy of answering her phone, and she knew it. We don’t have to take calls from our monsters. Not any of us. We don’t even have to listen to their pathetic message. We can just push delete.

Listening to Fox today and all the hot takes from their Republican hosts, they still refuse to acknowledge the corruption at all. It’s almost like there is a moratorium not to talk about it, despite the fact that it was consistently the first or second top issue for voters.

"Without action, Governor Hinojosa will inherit the powers of a DICTATOR." So y'all are just admitting that Abbott has been a dictator while he was in office? "We still have total power in Texas, and we must act like it by using the remaining ten weeks to restore separation of powers" And admitting that you need to "restore" separation of powers, as in you destroyed them earlier and want them back? Shameless traitors to liberal democracy.
🚨 BREAKING: Texas State Rep. Brian Harrison IMMEDIATELY calls on Gov. Greg Abbott to call a Special Session while they still have control to strip the governor's emergency powers before Gina Hinojosa (D) assumes office "Without action, Governor Hinojosa will inherit the powers of a DICTATOR." - Ban the governor from suspending or changing state laws - End emergency orders after 30 days unless the Legislature ratifies them - Stop the governor from reissuing orders that expired or that lawmakers rejected - Require emergency orders to be narrowly tailored - Fast-track court challenges to emergency orders "We still have total power in Texas, and we must act like it by using the remaining ten weeks to restore separation of powers and limit the emergency powers that Governor-Elect Hinojosa is set to inherit, which would allow her to destroy liberty in Texas by executive fiat." He says he supports doing this for ANY governor, Republican or Democrat, but this makes it particularly pressing. Honestly — Texas got wiped out. The clock is ticking!
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Rep. Brian Harrison filed HB911 in 2022 to restrict these same emergency powers for any governor, stating they undermine separation of powers and should be opposed irrespective of party. Abbott has repeatedly issued/renewed disaster declarations exercising them. texasscorecard.com/state/state-re… capitol.texas.gov/BillLookup/His… statutes.capitol.texas.gov/Docs/GV/htm/GV… gov.texas.gov/news/post/gove… chron.com/news/article/t…

Gambling companies spent $23 million backing a Nebraska ballot measure to legalize online sports betting. Opponents raised just $1 mil. Voters rejected it, 55%-45%. The federal government must stop forcing prediction market sports gambling into communities that don't want it.

Important
Last night, Sen. Andy Kim (D-NJ) told me something I keep thinking about: While Democrats may want to celebrate, they need to remember that this isn't a sporting event. This is Americans sending the strongest signal possible that they are in pain, and hurting, and want help. Now Congress needs to answer that call. It was powerful stuff, and if the party is smart they'll follow his instincts.

This is an unusual tweet. My reading of this is the Vice President is blaming the policy of the President. And the son of the President is tweeting agreement. Am I missing something? Is there a really clever play at work here or is someone dense?

Vance says “The reason we lost is the war.” Yeh. But also tariffs, driving up prices well before the war. Unleashing ICE & CBP in a cruel assault on immigrants who aren’t “the worst of the worst.” There’s the unprecedented corruption. Trump added $2.2 billion to his net worth & surrounded himself with billionaires. There’s disruption of the social safety net, with cuts to Medicaid, SNAP, and ACA subsides. And Trump’s complete cluelessness - his ballroom, the reflecting pool, adding his name to the Kennedy Center. And finally his obsession with John Husted’s butt.

Don’t allow Republicans and media to set the narrative with their framing and word choices. Push back every time. Congressional oversight and investigations are not about RETRIBUTION, they are about ACCOUNTABILITY. You were elected to hold them accountable, never forget it.

If you told Trump he could have all those Republican seats back if he returned the $3+ billion he’s grifted off the presidency in the last 2 years, he’d take the cash and give up the seats every single time without hesitation.
