At approximately 4:22 p.m. Monday, the FDNY responded to 48-08 47th Street in Queens for a report of a worker trapped up to his waist following a soil collapse near an apartment building. "Working alongside a Con Edison vacuum truck to suction away dirt and debris from around the victim, our Special Operations members stabilized the excavation with two trench struts and a rigged four-to-one system off a 24-foot ladder high point to hoist him out of the hole," Battalion Chief Ryan Traina said. A total of 162 FDNY personnel from 28 fire units and 11 EMS units operated on scene. FDNY Rescue Paramedics assessed the worker during the rescue operation and provided medical care following his removal. The worker suffered minor injuries and was transported to Elmhurst Hospital for further evaluation.

On Friday, October 30, Engine 82/Ladder 31 welcomed 95-year-old retired Captain Walter Powers back to the firehouse where he began his career more than six decades ago. Arranged by his family, the visit gave Captain Powers and his son the opportunity to tour his former firehouse, look back at old photos and videos, share memories and enjoy lunch with current members of Engine 82. Appointed to the FDNY in 1963, Captain Powers began his career at Engine 82 before serving in several firehouses throughout the city, eventually rising to the rank of Captain. He retired in 1989 after more than 26 years of dedicated service. The FDNY thanks Captain Powers for his years of service and the members of Engine 82 for helping make this memorable reunion possible.

Four family members died and one was critically injured after a lithium-ion battery caught fire inside a Bronx apartment on Oct. 28. The battery was in the kitchen when it exploded, blocking the apartment's exit and trapping a family inside. Lithium-ion battery fires can erupt in seconds, spread rapidly, and produce intense heat and toxic smoke.  These fires can be deadly. We are reminding all New Yorkers to take these precautions seriously: ▪️ Charge and store these batteries and devices outside, wherever possible. ▪️ Never block doorways, hallways or exits. ▪️ Only purchase batteries and devices that are certified by a nationally recognized testing lab, like UL. ▪️ Never use damaged or incompatible batteries or chargers. Following these safety tips can be the difference between life and death. Don't take the risk. Don't ignore the warnings.

🕑 Daylight Saving Time ends this weekend. Remember, only working smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms save lives. When it's time to "fall back," it's also a good time to check and replace any batteries. For more safety tips, go to FDNYSmart.org.

More than 50,000 people are expected to take part in New York City's Village Halloween Parade on Oct. 31, a spooky season tradition since 1973. If you're heading to Manhattan to catch all the action, don't let your viewing spot become a fright! 👻 Keep these safety tips in mind: ➡️ Fire escapes are for emergencies, not parade views. Keep them clear. ➡️ Planning to watch from a rooftop or roof setback? Check with building management first to make sure it's approved for viewing. Have a safe and happy Halloween from the FDNY! 🎃

First responders from across the United States came together Wednesday in Times Square for the 2026 Roll Call of Heroes presented by the First Responders Children's Foundation, commemorating National First Responders Day. Among those recognized was FDNY Firefighter Travis Langan, of Ladder Company 123. Firefighter Langan was off duty when he helped rescue a woman who was trapped inside her submerged vehicle on the Jackie Robinson Parkway during severe flash flooding in May. Firefighter Langan climbed onto the vehicle, broke through the sunroof with his bare hands, and pulled the woman to safety. Thank you to all first responders who risk their lives to help others in New York City and across the country every day.

So far in 2026, there have been 401 fires caused by lithium-ion batteries. There have been 74 injuries and six deaths related to these fires. These numbers are up from 2025. We implore all New Yorkers to heed our warnings and safety messaging on lithium-ion batteries and micromobility devices. Safe practices can save your life, and the lives of your family and neighbors.
