That's a seven-figure bag of bass. Congrats, Matt! Matt Robertson just made $1.25 million catching bass. The Kentucky pro found a good stretch of water below Old Hickory Dam, where the current kept smallmouth feeding and a swimbait on a jighead did the work. He opened the tournament with a 20-pound bag, caught enough to make the final, and had the good sense to leave his fish alone until they counted again. Now he's the inaugural World Bass Enterprises The Champions winner, with the largest first-place check in professional bass fishing history. Not bad money for knowing where to throw a jighead.

The Champions field is down to 15, and $1.25 million is on the line. Now the weights reset to zero for Saturday's final.

“Nothing could have prepared me for the grandeur of those waters.” Tom Skerritt, who played Reverend Maclean in the 1992 film “A River Runs Through It,” has died at 93. Three decades after filming in Montana, he returned to the Gallatin River to help document the threats facing the waters that had captivated him. Skerritt also served on the board of American Rivers and supported river conservation efforts in Montana. Rest in peace, Tom Skerritt. 1933–2026.

The turkey woods lost one of the very best. Col. Tom Kelly, author of “The Tenth Legion” and longtime Field & Stream contributor, has died at 99. This spring, the gobblers will sound off without him. We’ll miss you, Colonel.
