If open banking is to increase competition, Canada needs a rollout timeline that shows when Canadians can act on their data, not just view it.
Write access would let people initiate payments, fund accounts and switch providers more easily.
Budget 2026 should set public dates for each stage of the rollout, cover all account types and move forward with the industry standard. A public adoption scorecard would show whether the framework is actually reaching Canadians and having the desired impact on competition.

Canada has made the commitments. Now it needs to deliver them.
Budget 2025 delivered real progress, advancing open banking and laying the groundwork for a stablecoin framework. We're glad to see momentum building on the RTR too.
We’re calling on the federal government to build on last year’s progress by:
✔️ Ensuring balanced access to the real-time rail
✔️ Moving quickly to prohibit transfer fees
✔️ Addressing the barriers that make it hard for Canadians to switch providers.
Competition only works when Canadians can find a better option and actually choose it. Budget 2026 is the chance to move at speed and turn commitments into more choice.

With the Federal government advancing the Consumer-Driven Banking Act, transferring oversight to the Bank of Canada, & targeting payment initiation by mid-2027, momentum has never been stronger.

Canada’s 2025 federal budget is here—and it delivered.
Yesterday’s commitments are huge steps toward a more competitive and resilient financial sector. We were thrilled to see nearly all of our pre-budget recommendations in the budget.

The market for credit is failing SMEs in Canada. Credit is harder to come by for SMEs and more expensive when they come by it.

Canadians pay higher fees for everyday banking than citizens of Australia and the United Kingdom do and they get less in return. Canada’s financial sector is heavily concentrated. Over the years, the UK and Australia have boosted competition in their financial sectors.
Meanwhile, Canada is still suffering from the problems boosting competition would fix: high fees and poor customer service. This year’s federal budget should make financial services more affordable for Canadians. buff.ly/0VPKEcN
According to the C.D. Howe Institute, the financial sector’s contribution to Canada’s productivity is “underwhelming.” The financial sector is not just a vault for your money. It’s the economy’s brain, deciding how to allocate capital across the economy.
SMBs make up more than 99 percent of the Canadian economy, but they’re not getting access to the financing they need to grow. Banks are lending less to SMBs than to bigger firms. And when banks do lend to SMBs, it costs SMBs more here than it does in other countries.
This year’s federal budget should make it easier for SMBs to access capital and invest in themselves and the Canadian economy. For more, check out the blueprint we sent to the government: buff.ly/0VPKEcN
