A new FIU study found that preschoolers ages 4–7 with higher BMI showed differences in brain regions linked to reward, taste and hunger.
Using advanced MRI scans of 159 children, researchers found these brain-body associations may begin earlier in childhood than previously understood. The findings do not show that brain differences cause higher body weight or the other way around but offer new insight into early brain development and obesity risk.

As Alzheimer's rates continue to rise, researchers at FIU's Robert Stempel College of Public Health & Social Work are studying how sleep, stress, and diet interact to affect long-term brain health. Their work, part of the NIH-funded Tri-Sleep Study led by Dr. Shanna Burke and Dr. Sabrina Sales Martinez, has identified everyday habits that may help lower Alzheimer's risk, including getting consistent, uninterrupted sleep, managing chronic stress, eating a nutrient-rich diet, and staying physically active.
A college degree creates opportunities. Over the past decade, FIU’s four-year graduation rate for first-time-in-college students has increased 45 percentage points, reaching 70% in 2024.
FIU’s approach to student success is delivering results, from improved graduation outcomes to $2.3 million in estimated annual savings through coordinated support and resources.
In 2026, Florida TaxWatch recognized FIU with a Government Productivity Award for this work.

FIU received $15 million from the state of Florida to expand its Wall of Wind 2.0 facility, supporting research on extreme hurricane winds and their impact on homes, buildings and infrastructure.
The investment will help researchers test winds of up to 200 mph and develop solutions for stronger, safer and more resilient communities. It also supports the future development of ExtremeS, a facility designed to study the combined effects of wind, storm surge, waves and flooding.
