One of the most critical next phases for the Alberta independence movement is institutionalization.
Whether through political parties, effective organizations, or both, we need permanent institutions capable of sustaining and advancing the movement for years to come.

Wind West has been advanced with almost no public discussion on the costs and benefits. Economist @E_R_Sepulveda lays out the facts, costs and regulatory pitfalls that await this ill-conceived project: “Wind West power at more than $200/MWh could only be resold at a loss.”

The realities of renewables in cold, dark locations.
“Yukon Energy planned to connect a $35-million Whitehorse battery-storage system to the grid this year, describing it as “crucial” for improving grid stability. But the batteries froze during last December’s cold snap after generators that had been keeping them warm failed…
Energy think tanks, such as the Pembina Institute, promote adoption of renewable generation throughout the North to replace diesel generators. But the Yukon government says it has already reached the limits of its ability to incorporate renewables.
Mr. Laking said the territory’s solar facilities actually drew more power than they generated during the cold snap, owing to the energy used to heat them.”

Wouldn’t it be nice?
“This life-or-death quality of every election has been compounded by the tendency of winners to interpret their victory as an invitation to govern precisely how they want, with no deference to the pluralism inherent in a politically diverse society.
Just as losers must learn to accept the result of elections, so too must winners. What they have to accept is that their victory—especially in the close elections that are now routine in America—isn’t a mandate for every maximalist position they hold.”

My latest for @TheHubCanada: Canada needs to start embracing AI data centres
AI will exist regardless of what Canada or any particular province decides to do in response. History has repeatedly demonstrated that nations are better off leading technological and military revolutions than being left behind by them. Canada will be better served by having independent capabilities than not, and we have a long way to catch up. The more AI data centres, the better.

I'm starting to think that most journalists don't understand how important their jobs are.
We are supposed to hold government to account. When we do so, we properly inform Canadians and force politicians to react and justify their positions. This makes our country better.
When journalists refuse to do this, parties can get away with doing whatever they want.
Unfortunately, I fear too many journalists have confused critiquing Carney with critiquing Canada. They're not the same thing. Carney is not Canada, nor do I expect him to stick around when he's no longer PM.
