This is why @ImmunoBites exists—breaking down the jargon for digestible and accessible #scicomm.
A great reminder that we need to make our science accessible to the public. We #immunologists are notorious for making our field so full of jargon! The fastest way to lose your audience is to start with "I study CD8+CD69hiCD103+CD44+CD49a+ TRM".

Sleep is a restorative process crucial for the proper functioning of the immunity. Multiple parameters of our immune system were found to display notable patterns in synchrony with the circadian rhythm indicating the synergistic actions of sleep on our immunity.
In their article, Besedovsky et al. mention a remarkable finding by stating that prolonged sleep reduction and the accompanying stress evoke a chronic low-grade inflammation, and also cause immunodeficiency, both of which have devastating effects on health!
The article describes in detail the importance of sleep for a healthy immune system, for more details, check out the cited article below!

With almost 10% of the world population suffering from allergies, which are sometimes lethal, researchers globally strive to produce new treatments to cure various allergic diseases.
The researchers also inspected the compound’s mechanism of action and found multiple pathways! For instance, the release of histamine and pro-inflammatory cytokines by mast cells is regulated by intracellular calcium levels.
The researchers determined the effect of FMTs on intracellular calcium levels and were found to decrease its quantities!

“Inflammaging”, a term used to describe the chronic, low-grade inflammation associated with age-related diseases, has been gaining lots of traction recently.
This occurs as senescent immune cells keep producing more cytokines, specifically IL-6 and TNF-alpha, which are linked to disability and mortality in older adults!

Columbia Engineering researchers genetically engineered an encapsulation system for therapeutic bacteria allowing them to hide from the immune system. The microbes are thus able to deliver drugs to tumors more effectively and kill cancer cells!
