🍄 Resistant fungal spores are already in the air we breathe. Professor Matthew Fisher (SPH) has been awarded funding to tackle it, as part of a £54m UK investment in biosecurity. 🧵
"The same chemicals that protect our crops are undermining the drugs that protect our patients," says Professor Fisher. The team will work with farmers, composters, regulators and patient groups.
The aim is an action plan that safeguards both food security and human health. Read more on Imperial's role in the £54m investment: imperial.ac.uk/news/articles…
Imperial is a founding partner of the newly launched ARC London, backed by £22m to tackle some of London's biggest health and social care challenges — with our Dr Ana Luisa Neves (SPH) serving as Deputy Director.
"We have a unique opportunity to connect research, innovation and expertise across the capital and turn evidence into solutions that can make a real difference to people's lives," says Dr Neves. Full story: imperial.ac.uk/news/articles…
Our Director Professor Neil Ferguson features in the FT on DR Congo's Ebola epidemic, now the fastest-spreading in the country's history. His estimate: real infections could be 3x official figures due to unrecorded deaths in the community. Full piece: ft.com/content/abd30cb8-08f6…
Where you live, what you earn and your sex can shape your risk of a life-threatening asthma or COPD flare-up. Our researchers analysed 5+ years of health records for 7.6M+ people in England — and the inequalities haven't improved since 2019.
"Despite years of policy efforts these gaps have not narrowed," says lead author Dr Hannah Whittaker (SPH). Read the full findings: imperial.ac.uk/news/articles…

The House of Lords has published a landmark report on pet flea and tick treatments, calling for a more precautionary approach to their use. Imperial researchers played a central role in the evidence that shaped it. A thread on what they found:
Schemes that automatically supply treatments without diagnosis are part of the problem. Dr Andrew Prentis compares it to being handed year-round antibiotics just in case you fall ill with ~30% of dog owners & ~20% of cat owners currently use year-round preventative treatments.
Professor Leon Barron, whose team has analysed water samples across UK rivers "It's all about balance & is fixable, but we need everyone to realise that this is a major problem"
