Meta has built a humanoid robot prototype called Max with Chinese robotics firm Fourier, according to The Information, as it explores what robots could do in the home. The roughly 48 kg robot took about three months to build, and work on a second version, Max 2, is already underway, though Meta says it has no plans to sell these units.

Researchers at Florida Atlantic University compared several quantum machine learning methods for predicting lung cancer from symptom and risk-factor data when training data is deliberately limited. Starting from a public dataset of 309 records, the team expanded it to 540 synthetic-balanced samples and narrowed the inputs to 10 features, then trained the models on just 108 samples. A quantum support vector machine running on D-Wave’s annealing quantum computers performed best, reaching 94.31% accuracy in simulation and 91.90% on actual quantum hardware. The team also tested gate-based approaches across Qiskit, Cirq, PennyLane, and OpenJij. The researchers stress the results are preliminary, since the data covers symptoms rather than imaging or pathology, and the extra samples were artificially generated. The research is published in Discover Quantum Science.

Harvard researchers have developed Mobilio, an AI smartphone app that gives blind and low-vision users real-time navigation toward a destination while steering them away from obstacles, using customizable audio cues matched to their walking gait. In tests with 14 participants, those using Mobilio with a cane reached their destinations 13% faster and had 41% fewer indoor collisions than those using a cane with Google Maps. The app relies on the phone’s camera, GPS, motion sensors, and LiDAR where available, so no specialty hardware is needed. Its computer-vision model is trained on images from a pedestrian’s perspective rather than a driver’s, making it more accurate for sidewalks and crosswalks. The design was shaped by input from more than 100 people with limited or no sight. The research is published in Nature Biomedical Engineering.

Researchers using NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope studied 37 nearby dwarf galaxies and found that much of the oxygen their stars produced is missing. Simulations predict these galaxies should hold significantly more oxygen than they do, which suggests that galactic winds driven by massive stars and supernova explosions are far more effective at expelling heavy elements from low-mass galaxies than current models assume. Oxygen was chosen as the tracer because it is abundant, easy to measure, and its production by stars is well understood. The team combined archival Hubble imaging of individual stars with data from Spitzer, the Very Large Array, and the Australian Telescope Compact Array to track oxygen across stars, gas, and dust. It remains unclear whether the missing oxygen sits in the halo of gas around each galaxy or has escaped into intergalactic space. The study is published in The Astrophysical Journal.
