Recent volatility in the stock market has people DM’ing me for investment advice. I tend to steer clear of that. I’d feel terrible if someone took my advice and lost money, and besides, my own investment strategy is pretty vanilla. But I do have some advice on how to behave during times like these. Some time ago I wrote a paper on myopic loss aversion with Michael Haigh (see the first comment for that paper). Later, I wrote a piece for the @nytimes on what it means for everyday investors. My bottom line? This is one of the few areas where you should not pay attention. Find out why here: nytimes.com/2016/03/27/your-… My rule of thumb? Put it on the calendar and look at your portfolio about once a quarter, unless something big changes in your life. Otherwise, let it ride.

All politics is local has been dead for a long time, but it's dead dead now.

Despite the unprecedented and ongoing decline in crime and violence in America, fighting crime was a top priority for voters in the midterm election. Responses from more than 113,000 voters through the NORC Civic Health and Elections Data Project show near-universal concern about crime in big American cities.

A stunning rebuke of mainstream Twitter thought.

Did broader pandemic recovery efforts help reduce homicide? At CCJ’s latest webinar, @JohnKRoman of @NORCNews explains how increased local government funding may have helped reduce homicide & violent crime by expanding access to teachers, clinicians, police, & other services.

As the talking heads kill time with voter interviews until the polls close, keep in mind that anecdotes aren't data. They are stories purposefully selected to make a specific point. They have zero predictive power.

Honeycrisp has become an everything and nothing label. Lots of disappointment in that bin. Recommend the Pink Lady for a sturdier day to day apple, Jazz for entertaining.

A lot of folks are looking at these data and commenting on the 'patriotism' and 'equality' gaps between political partisans. But isn't the bigger issue that neither parties members value 'humility' and 'service' ?
New Gallup poll asks "which values the country most needs today?" Out of a list of 12 values, Republicans put "patriotism" #1, for Dems it ranks dead last - by a lot. Dems say "equality" is most needed, Republicans rank it 11th out of 12.

If other people were there when the 'fake' robbery happened, and those folks had guns pointed at them and their property taken, that's not an immigration scam, that's a robbery. A two year sentence is remarkably lenient.
Ya'll, this is nuts. Hundreds - that's right, HUNDREDS - of armed robberies between 2022 and 2024 weren't real. They were staged by the "victims" as part of a massive immigration fraud scheme to secure U-visas for themselves and their families. cwbchicago.com/2026/10/buckt…

For those who doubt official police records, this report finding a 25% drop in violent crime uses survey data from 240,000 people across the US. This is an unprecedented crime decline.
According to preliminary estimates from @BJSgov's NCVS, violent crime declined by 25% in 2025. It's another data point joining many others indicating a massive crime drop over the past few years. bjs.ojp.gov/library/publicat…

A must read, Why so Many Men Aren't Working. "Most jobs—manly or otherwise—require some ability to concentrate, to listen to and follow directions, and to endure discomfort. Many also require knowing how to interact respectfully with women. Days spent watching porn, gambling, and using drugs augment none of these skills."

“How dangerous is your city?” is the wrong question. The better question is: what kind of dangerous? City homicide and violence rankings often move in different directions. Each pattern calls for a different fix.

Ya gotta love Tom Morello. He's not hiding his politics.
You can’t do progressive solidarity politics while also denying the basic legitimacy of the country and the American national community. slowboring.com/p/destroying-…

I hold out hope that one day the sports franchises in the Washington, DC metro area realize that the name of the city is the "District of Columbia" and not Washington. But. Not yet. nytimes.com/athletic/7677666…

What is also widely ignored is that the reason there is so much less car crime and street property crime now is due to market-based solutions making cars harder to steal and cameras ubiquitous. Not cops or prevention.
There’s a decent amount of denial about how much worse urban crime was in late-20th century America. If you don’t remember stuff like The Club, removable car stereos, or subway graffiti ask your parents or local LLM.
