A little over two years ago, I stood in front of the @LoyolaStritch Class of 2026 as their M2 pathology instructor before heading to Michigan. Last week, I had the profound honor of returning to deliver their commencement address. Full circle in the best possible way.
I spoke to them about curiosity, wonder, resilience. About the bone marrow, of course (I promise it made sense).
I want them to remember that medicine is still sacred work. In a world moving faster and louder every day, I hope they protect the part of themselves that still pauses in awe at the privilege of caring for another human being.
To the Stritch School of Medicine Class of 2026: thank you for allowing me to be a small part of your journey, both then and now. Watching you cross that stage was a privilege I will never forget.
Never stop exploring.

Before a breast cancer treatment plan, there’s a diagnosis. And behind that diagnosis is a pathologist.
ASCP CEO and breast pathologist, Ali Brown, MD, FASCP, shares the role pathologists play in a breast cancer diagnosis, how their work guides patient care, and why it matters to every patient affected by breast cancer.
Your pathologist is part of your care team. Share this video so more patients know. 💗

How do we eliminate global inequities in digital pathology? 🌍🔬
In our new paper, we advocate moving beyond traditional top-down technology transfer toward reciprocal innovation — establishing a true bidirectional exchange between high-resource and low-resource health systems.
💡 What high-resource settings bring: Regulatory standards, validation frameworks, and subspecialty mentorship. 💡 What low-resource settings teach us: Frugal engineering, resilient hub-and-spoke telepathology models, and cost-efficient workflows.
🎥 Watch our cinematic video abstract to see how collaborative networks and open-source tools can democratize diagnostic access globally!

A diagnosis can change a life. Access to one should never depend on where that life is lived.
Today, I’m honored to deliver the keynote at the Pathologists Overseas 2026 Virtual Gala, celebrating 35 years of service.
What I admire about PO is its commitment to the people and systems that make diagnosis possible. Working alongside local laboratory professionals, PO supports education, quality assurance, and laboratory information systems that help turn expertise into reliable answers for patients.
Behind every specimen is someone waiting. Behind every timely, accurate diagnosis is a team whose knowledge, resources, and dedication make the next step in care possible.
That is work worth celebrating. And it is work worth supporting.
Please join us today, recognize the founders and partners who have sustained this mission, and help support its next chapter. Attend, donate, volunteer, or share PO’s work with someone who should know about it.
📅 Today, October 22 | Noon to 2 p.m. Eastern
🎤 My keynote: 12:30 p.m. Eastern

Plasma cells are amazing! Their appearance reflects an extraordinary commitment to antibody production: the eccentric nucleus, the abundant cytoplasm filled with rough endoplasmic reticulum, the pale Golgi hof. Features we learn early in training become more interesting as we come to understand what they represent.
Some plasma cells persist for decades, producing antibodies against infections we have long forgotten. I find that remarkable. Part of our immunologic history is maintained by these cells, quietly at work in the marrow.
In neoplasia, they may retain that familiar appearance while producing a protein capable of causing profound injury. A seemingly mature plasma cell can belong to a clone whose antibodies damage the kidneys, deposit in tissues, or increase blood viscosity. Its appearance alone tells us surprisingly little about the harm it can cause.
